Owners of the Mustang Mach-E are facing another recall due to a faulty software update.
Ford is recalling certain 2021 Mustang Mach-E models that were improperly repaired last year.
These electric vehicles lacked the correct software, leaving an existing braking issue unresolved.
An issue with the programming tool caused this mistake, necessitating a return to the dealership.
Ford appears to have a penchant for recalls, as they continue to recall vehicles that were already recalled. This latest recall affects the Mustang Mach-E, which is being called back due to a previous repair mishap in 2024.
As reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, eight electric crossovers from the 2021 model year were inadequately repaired during a prior recall. The initial problem involved an over-the-air update to the anti-lock braking system calibration file, which caused the system to revert to a default configuration that lacks power brake assist.
Customers would still have some braking capability, but they would face “longer pedal travel, increased pedal pressure, and decreased braking response.” Several safety features were also turned off, including anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, traction control, hill start assist, and pre-collision assist. To remedy this, the vehicles were recalled so that the ABS calibration could be properly updated.
However, it seems that for some vehicles, the software was not installed properly. Consequently, the original braking issue persists, diminishing the braking system's effectiveness and raising the risk of a crash.
The problem is attributed to a software tool that failed to upload the correct software to the affected vehicles. Ford became aware of the issue last November, prompting an investigation that revealed only 84.5% of the recalled Mustang Mach-Es had the correct software installed. Although Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries linked to this problem, they opted to issue another recall.
