Tesla is evaluating the long-wheelbase Model Y on the European continent, having modified the SUV to accommodate a more spacious third row of seats.

Despite receiving a facelift earlier this year, the once-popular Model Y has experienced a decline in demand. To attract buyers, Tesla has introduced several features, including a Performance variant that has been missing from the electric crossover's lineup since the spring and a basic entry-level trim. Additionally, there's the new long-wheelbase Model Y L.

Currently available in China, the Model Y L is set to make its European debut later this year. It boasts an increase of approximately 6 inches (150 mm) in wheelbase over the standard 113.8 inches (2,890 mm) of the current Model Y, allowing for a third row of seats, most likely in a 2+2+2 layout.

Previously, both the US and European versions of the Model Y offered an optional third row, but it felt cramped due to the unchanged wheelbase, and the feature was not available on the updated 'Juniper' model. Reintroducing a third row with additional legroom should enhance its appeal, especially in Europe where the Model X has recently been discontinued.

The overall silhouette of the L closely resembles that of the standard Model Y, but the elongated rear door reveals the changes. On the standard-wheelbase version, the wheel arch intrudes significantly into the door space, while on the L, the shutline is positioned almost ahead of the wheel. Up front, both Model Ys from the B pillar forwards are identical, sporting the new LED light bar and slim headlights introduced with the February update.

Furthermore, there’s another subtle identifier for the L, which can be recognized even without observing its elongated design. This feature appears to be designed for the upcoming Model Y Performance. Unlike the flat spoiler that extends from the rear window on the hatch, the L is equipped with a ducktail spoiler reminiscent of those found in a BMW tuner’s catalog.

The L’s slightly altered shape may necessitate enhanced stability at high speeds, although it is not faster than the standard Model Y. In fact, due to a minor increase in curb weight, it should theoretically be a bit slower than the dual-motor, AWD short-wheelbase variant, which Tesla claims can accelerate to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.8 seconds.
