Mercedes' Budget-Friendly Crossover Is Undergoing an Electrifying Transformation | Carscoops

      The revamped Mercedes GLA has been spotted during testing in Europe.

      Despite being heavily camouflaged, the design appears more streamlined and upscale.

      This crossover will be built on the MMA platform and will feature hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric variants.

      Almost two years ago, Mercedes teased the redesigned GLA, and now spy photographers have captured the first images of this entry-level crossover. Seen from a distance, this model will introduce significant changes, including a fully electric version.

      The prototype, cloaked in heavy camouflage, seems to have a completely enclosed grille accompanied by sharp headlights. We can also make out slender air intakes and a more dynamic front bumper.

      Continuing towards the rear, the vehicle features noticeable fender flares and sleek body lines that are sharp and taut. The crossover also has flush door handles, an angular beltline, and a more striking greenhouse design.

      The back end has undergone a complete transformation and looks much more appealing. It includes a sculpted liftgate with an angular rear window and a wraparound spoiler, complemented by bold taillights that feature a star motif. While the bumper appears somewhat plain in comparison, it does include a new license plate recess and lacks exhaust cutouts.

      The interior seems to be under wraps, but it is expected to emulate the CLA's design approach. This suggests a minimalist aesthetic centered around screens. Anticipated features include a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14-inch infotainment system, and a 14-inch display for the front passenger, all powered by the new Mercedes-Benz Operating System and incorporating artificial intelligence from Microsoft and Google.

      The powertrain options are expected to mirror those of the CLA, which means an electric variant with a dual-motor all-wheel drive system generating a total of 349 hp (260 kW / 354 PS) and 380 lb-ft (515 Nm) of torque is likely. It should come with an 85 kWh battery and support DC fast charging of up to 320 kW.

      Furthermore, the MMA-based crossover is anticipated to include a hybrid powertrain that combines a 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine, a 1.3 kWh battery, and an electric motor integrated into an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. A plug-in hybrid variant is also expected, providing customers with a wide array of options.
