The Rivian R2 prototype has been seen testing nearly a year and a half after its initial announcement.
This SUV features a new midsize platform and is expected to provide over 300 miles of range.
The prototype showcases rugged wheels and a rear window that functions similarly to a side window.
After making a substantial impression with its initial lineup of electric vehicles, Rivian is now targeting the larger market. The R2, first unveiled in March of the previous year, is intended to be a more affordable option within the range. Although it was initially presented as a concept, it is only recently that the R2 has been observed undergoing real-world prototype testing.
This model could be crucial for Rivian’s future, signaling a shift in its efforts to transition from niche appeal to mainstream acceptance.

Consistent with Rivian’s distinctive approach, this prototype deviates from typical designs seen from traditional automakers. Instead of the conventional black and white camouflage, Rivian has developed a unique outdoor-themed camo wrap that includes images of trees and lakes. While it is visually striking, it does little to obscure the overall shape and design of the R2’s body panels.
Familiar Design, With a Few Modifications
As expected, the design closely resembles the vehicle previewed 18 months ago. This means it retains many recognizable Rivian design features, such as the headlights and prominent front and rear light bars, along with rugged bumpers and fender flares.
Notably, this prototype includes a charging flap on the driver's side, whereas last year’s show vehicle had it on the passenger side. If Rivian is prudent, it would incorporate charging flaps on both sides, but our spy photographers could not capture any images of the passenger side, leaving it uncertain whether Rivian will pursue this option.
A Practical, Outdoor-Friendly Feature
One particularly interesting aspect visible on this prototype is the rear window, which can be lowered just like the side windows. It was lowered as the vehicle departed the testing facility, indicating it may be a standard feature.
This version of the R2 also features new blacked-out wheels paired with BFGoodrich Trail-Terrain tires, giving it a more rugged appearance compared to the concept.
The R2 is based on Rivian’s new midsize platform, and the flagship version is expected to offer more than 300 miles (483 km) of range. Options for single-, dual-, and tri-motor versions will also be available. The R2 will be produced at the company’s expanded factory in Normal, Illinois, as well as its planned multi-billion-dollar site in Georgia.
