Mercedes Is Phasing Out Its Least Successful EV for a More Serious Model | Carscoops
Although the design of the electric GLC will be recognizable, it will debut with an entirely new front design.
The new GLC EQ is set to take the place of the less impressive EQC and will compete with the forthcoming BMW iX3.
At the front, it boasts an illuminated grille and a glowing three-pointed star emblem.
The electric SUV will be powered by an 800-volt system that allows for 320 kW DC charging capabilities.
As the electric vehicle market continues to evolve, Mercedes-Benz is pressing forward with plans to enhance its electric lineup. The company has been developing the new all-electric GLC equipped with EQ Technology for some time, and we now have confirmation of its unveiling date.
Reports suggest that it will be revealed at the IAA Mobility show in September, commonly referred to as the Munich Motor Show. In a time when electric SUVs and crossovers are gaining popularity, the GLC EV is poised to be a significant model for the German manufacturer.
This upcoming GLC EV will essentially take over from the EQC, a model that failed to make a strong impact. It is expected to maintain the overall size of the gasoline-powered GLC, but with a distinctly refreshed design. Mercedes describes it as representing “a new face of the brand,” indicating a more contemporary and sophisticated look.
Design elements are becoming clearer.
Mercedes has provided a single teaser image of the new model, but prototypes spotted in recent months have given us a better glimpse of it. The teaser suggests an illuminated front grille, enhancing the SUV's visual presence. The prototypes have also unveiled redesigned LED headlights and taillights, pointing towards a comprehensive redesign.
Key competitors for the GLC with EQ Technology include the Porsche Macan Electric and the BMW iX3, which will soon see significant updates as part of the brand’s Neue Klasse initiative. Appropriately, the manufacturer has engineered an 800-volt electrical architecture for the SUV that enables DC fast charging at speeds up to 320 kW. This setup can add approximately 162 miles (260 km) of range in just 10 minutes.
Launch Version and Future Developments
The first model to be launched will be the GLC 400 4Matic with EQ Technology. Mercedes has yet to disclose exact performance specifications, including motor configuration or acceleration times, but a more powerful version is anticipated to arrive shortly thereafter.
In addition to introducing the electric GLC in Munich, Mercedes will also present the MB.Drive Assist Pro semi-autonomous driving system and offer rides in a specially-equipped CLA. The EQS and S-Class featuring Drive Pilot will also be available for demonstration drives, alongside the innovative new Concept AMG GT XX on display with the GLC EQ.
