A special edition of the 8-Series is set to make its debut at Monterey Car Week, which could mark a final farewell for the model.

BMW has not revealed much information yet, but indications point towards a sendoff. The event will also feature the North American debut of the M2 CS.

With Monterey Car Week approaching in less than two weeks, BMW plans to unveil a limited edition 8-Series. The new model will be introduced on August 14 at 10:15 PM Eastern Time.

At this stage, BMW has kept details about the car under wraps, but they reminisced that the second-generation 8-Series was launched in the summer of 2018, later expanding to include a Coupe, Convertible, Gran Coupe, and high-performance M8. The automaker also highlighted the car’s racing history, which includes class victories at the 24 Hours of Daytona.

This hints that BMW may be offering a farewell to the 8-Series. Earlier reports indicated that the coupe and convertible versions were at risk of being discontinued, a move that wouldn’t be surprising given their lackluster sales figures. Mercedes has similarly phased out its S-Class Coupe and Convertible, making the 8-Series feel somewhat out of place.

While the future of the vehicle is uncertain, it has been suggested that the special edition will be based on the M850i. This model is equipped with a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine that generates 523 hp (390 kW / 530 PS) and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque.

In addition to the special edition, BMW will also showcase the North American debut of the M2 CS at Legends of the Autobahn. This is particularly fitting as the coupe recently earned the title of the "fastest compact car" on the Nürburgring with a time of 7:25.5.

For reference, the M2 CS starts at $98,600 and features a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six that produces 523 hp (390 kW / 530 PS) and 479 lb-ft (649 Nm) of torque. It comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission, allowing it to accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 3.7 seconds, with a top speed of 188 mph (303 km/h).

Prospective buyers will also discover a variety of carbon fiber components that reduce the model's weight by 97 lbs (44 kg) compared to an M2 with an automatic transmission. In addition to being lighter, the car features a lowered suspension with unique springs and dampers, along with model-specific engine mounts, M compound brakes, and a revised M Sport differential, among other enhancements.

Several other vehicles will also be showcased, including various race cars at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. Additionally, two art cars will be displayed at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, including the M1 painted by Andy Warhol.
