A modified 1970 Dodge Dart is set to be auctioned at Mecum’s Monterey event, featuring a 392 crate V8 engine, five-speed automatic transmission, rack and pinion steering, alongside custom paint and interior.

This hardtop model has been upgraded with a modern V8 powertrain as well as an enhanced chassis and brake system. Tubbed wheel arches accommodate large 18×10 Budnik rear wheels fitted with 285 mm tires.

While the focus often leans towards the iconic B- and E-body Dodge vehicles, such as the Chargers and Challengers, this Dart serves as a reminder that Dodge's smaller muscle cars also made a significant impact and can benefit from contemporary modifications.

The A-body Dart was Dodge’s compact offering during the late 1960s and early 1970s, typically available as a sedan, coupe, or convertible with modest inline six engines. However, with the right options, it could be equipped with powerful engines like the 340-cu-in or 383 cu-in V8, similar to that of its larger counterpart, the Charger. Some models were even fitted with the formidable 440-cu-in and 426-cu-in V8s for drag racing.

This restomod 1970 Dart being auctioned by Mecum in August presents a more well-rounded performance package than earlier models. Modern upgrades provide it with impressive acceleration, as well as improved braking and handling, along with 21st-century comforts that would have been unthinkable for the original Dart buyers.

Under the hood sits a 392 cu-in (6.4-liter) crate Hemi V8, which produces 485 hp (492 PS) and delivers power through a five-speed automatic transmission to a Sure Grip rear end. The combination of 3.55 gearing with the automatic transmission offers a balance of quick take-offs and comfortable highway cruising.

Unlike some vintage Darts that lacked power steering and brake boosters to accommodate large engines, this model includes a complete performance setup. It features power-assisted rack and pinion steering, coilover suspension, anti-roll bars at both front and rear, and Wilwood four-wheel disc brakes. The Budnik wheels at each corner are complemented by substantial 18×10-inch rear wheels, requiring mini-tubbed inner arches for clearance.

Inside, the Dart is equipped with modern power seats, a leather-covered aluminum dashboard, a custom Hi-Fi sound system, and a Vintage Air air conditioning unit. The combination of classic and modern elements is nearly flawless, although the 2010s-style Dodge shift quadrant for the automatic transmission is a letdown. With the considerable investment made in upgrading the rest of the vehicle, it raises the question of why a more bespoke solution wasn’t pursued.

Historically, the Dart has often been overshadowed by the Charger and Challenger, but it remains lighter, more agile, and possesses the underdog charm that appeals to many. For interested buyers, the full auction listing can be viewed here.
