If you're curious about how the reintroduced Honda Prelude will stand out among the other Civic-based models, here's your answer: it will be the only Honda aside from the Civic Type R to feature the company's dual-axis front suspension, which includes the performance model's wider track and front Brembo brakes as well. However, unlike the Type R's powerful turbo engine, it will be powered by the same engine used in the Civic Hybrid.
In other words, it combines a Type R chassis with Civic Hybrid power. On their own, both elements are quite impressive—indeed, they are among our favorites, as we consistently rank the Type R and Hybrid near the top of their respective categories. Together, they will create a unique segment. While some competitors are promoting hybrid engines as performance enhancements, this approach hasn't been universally accepted by car manufacturers.
For enthusiasts, it's reassuring that the new model retains its predecessor's two-door, front-wheel-drive configuration. Unfortunately, the manual transmission offered in earlier generations will not return, marking the CR-Z as the last sporty hybrid from Honda available with a manual option.
Even the term "sporty" is a bit of a stretch here; according to Honda, the Prelude is designed for something more akin to a grand tourer:
"The award-winning hybrid system will, for the first time, be combined with Honda's innovative new S+ Shift system, a new driving mode that further advances Linear Shift Control to enhance the Prelude’s sporty yet comfortable grand touring experience," Honda mentioned in its announcement.
What does this entail, specifically? We suspect it means simulated gears for the hybrid's unique transmission. However, we'll need to wait a few more months for confirmation; the Prelude is expected to arrive before the end of 2025.
