Two Recalls Have Not Resolved This Polestar Problem | Carscoops
In April, nearly 28,000 Polestar 2 vehicles were recalled in the US, yet the software patch failed to fix the rear-view camera issue.
The NHTSA has begun receiving reports from owners about unsuccessful software updates.
Polestar has issued two recalls for the 2 in the last year due to problems with the rear-view camera.
The electric vehicle manufacturer has acknowledged that its recall did not rectify the issue.
As reported by Carscoops, there have been 181 recalls related to rear-view camera malfunctions in the United States, indicating that new vehicles are affected by such issues approximately every two weeks. Earlier this year, Polestar launched two recalls concerning camera problems, and it appears that one of those efforts may not have actually resolved the defect.
According to a recall investigation initiated by the NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation, Polestar initially recalled the 2021-2024 Polestar 2 models last year due to rear-view cameras that might not activate when the car is in reverse. Polestar's solution was a software update in the infotainment system aimed at freeing up memory for the camera’s image to display.
However, that solution proved ineffective, leading to another recall in April for 27,816 Polestar 2 vehicles. In this case, Polestar claimed that a software update would maintain a high-speed signal connection between the Parking Assist Camera and the infotainment display, instead of having it toggle on and off as needed.
It appears that this second update did not resolve the problem. The NHTSA reported that starting on June 21, it began receiving complaints from owners of updated vehicles who continued to face rear-view camera issues. In July, the ODI spoke with Polestar, which confirmed that the over-the-air software fix did not successfully address the concern.
The Polestar 2 is not the only model experiencing rear-view camera problems. In May, the manufacturer revealed that the 2025 Polestar 3 also faces similar issues, where the camera image fails to appear when the SUV is placed in reverse. At that time, the company did not clarify if the 3's issue was related to the same problems as the 2, but indicated that it would create an over-the-air update to resolve it.
