This year is a great time for those looking to buy a compact SUV. Two of the top contenders in this segment have launched new generations, enhancing their design, technology, and performance. We're referring to the ever-popular Toyota RAV4 and the newly revamped Mazda CX-5, two Japanese competitors that consistently attract buyers in both the US and worldwide.

Mazda has introduced the fourth generation of the CX-5 just as Toyota has unveiled the sixth generation of the RAV4. While we await the opportunity for a test drive, there are already plenty of details to explore. Here’s an initial comparison using official specifications, images, and other relevant information.

      Design: Sporty Meets Robust

When examining the exterior, it’s clear that the design teams at the two brands have pursued different themes. The new CX-5 adopts a more athletic, coupe-like appearance characterized by flowing lines and a low profile, adhering to Mazda's evolving Kodo design philosophy. In contrast, the RAV4 features sharper angles, a boxier silhouette, and a vertical front end that imparts a tougher, more utilitarian vibe.

Additionally, Toyota has placed a greater focus on personalization this time, providing three visual themes for the RAV4: Core, Woodland, and GR Sport. Mazda has chosen a more straightforward approach, keeping the trim distinctions relatively understated. This is also reflected in wheel sizes; the RAV4 GR Sport is equipped with 20-inch alloy wheels, while the largest available wheels for the CX-5 currently measure 19 inches.

The new CX-5 has grown noticeably larger than its predecessor, now measuring 183.6 inches (4,663 mm) in length with a wheelbase extended to 109.3 inches (2,776 mm). On the other hand, the RAV4 has only seen slight adjustments, measuring between 180.9 and 181.8 inches (4,595 to 4,618 mm) depending on the variant, with an unchanged wheelbase of 105.9 inches (2,690 mm). In summary, the Mazda now boasts a slightly larger footprint compared to the Toyota, marking a change from earlier models.

      Interior: Technology-Driven and Family-Friendly

Inside, both SUVs have borrowed elements from their latest models, integrating new technology and redesigned interiors aimed at modern families. The RAV4 is outfitted with a freestanding touchscreen measuring up to 12.9 inches, running the company's new Arene operating system. Mazda raises the bar with a large 15.6-inch touchscreen powered by Google built-in, marking the biggest infotainment display the brand has offered in the West.

Both five-passenger cabins are designed for practicality, catering primarily to young families. Based on the images, the Mazda appears more upscale, aligning more closely with its larger siblings, the CX-70 and CX-90, in terms of interior style, whereas the RAV4 conveys an adventurous spirit.

The increased dimensions of the CX-5 should result in more space for passengers and cargo. However, Mazda has yet to disclose cargo volume figures, leaving it uncertain whether it will rival the Toyota RAV4's generous 749 liters (26.5 cubic feet) of trunk capacity.

      Powertrains: Hybrid Now or Later

The 2026 Toyota RAV4 will exclusively feature electrified powertrains, while the 2026 Mazda CX-5 will debut with a conventional gasoline engine, followed by a hybrid version in 2027. Both models are based on updated versions of their predecessors, meaning neither represents a complete redesign.

The RAV4 Hybrid generates 226 hp (229 PS) with front-wheel drive or 236 hp (239 PS) with all-wheel drive. The plug-in hybrid RAV4 Prime is the most powerful, with 320 hp (324 PS), all deriving from a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with electric motors.

Mazda's initial offering will be a 2.5-liter SkyActiv-G four-cylinder engine, carried over from the last generation, producing 187 hp (139 kW / 190 PS). It will come with a six-speed automatic transmission and standard i-Activ all-wheel drive. The forthcoming hybrid system, based on Mazda's new SkyActiv-Z engine, promises significant enhancements in both performance and efficiency.

Sales: The Numbers Reflect the Reality

Both the RAV4 and CX-5 rank as the top-selling vehicles for their respective brands, yet the sales disparity is considerable. In 2024, the outgoing Toyota RAV4 was ranked as the world's best-selling passenger vehicle, with 1,187,000 units sold globally, including 475,193 in the US. By comparison, Mazda sold 345,209 CX-5s worldwide, with 134,088 in the US.

      These statistics indicate strong
