Amid tariff challenges, Nissan and Honda may still collaborate on truck production in Mississippi.

Following the unsuccessful merger attempt, Nissan and Honda are said to be in discussions again.

The two companies are reportedly exploring the possibility of manufacturing trucks in Canton, Mississippi. While the plant currently produces the Frontier, there are indications that full-size trucks are also under consideration.

Earlier this year, Honda and Nissan opted against merging, but it seems both parties are still open to collaboration. This potential partnership appears to be motivated by the impact of President Trump’s tariffs on imports.

As per Nikkei, Honda is interested in Nissan’s underused facility in Canton, Mississippi. This factory builds the Frontier, and Honda believes it could be an ideal location for producing its own truck.

Reports are unclear, but it is suggested that Nissan might manufacture Honda-branded trucks at the site. While it would be logical to think they might discuss a Honda version of the Frontier, Nikkei mentioned a full-size truck instead.

This is noteworthy for a couple of reasons: the Frontier is a mid-size truck, and Nissan discontinued the full-size Titan in 2024 after years of disappointing sales.

Additionally, Honda already has a truck in the Ridgeline, which is a mid-size pickup featuring unibody construction rather than the conventional body-on-frame design.

Only time will reveal how this collaboration develops, but past reports indicated Honda's interest in partnering with Nissan on larger vehicles. This was thought to possibly include a version of the Nissan Armada, aiming to provide Honda with a competitor against vehicles like the Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon, Ford Expedition, Jeep Wagoneer, and Toyota Sequoia.

There were also discussions about jointly developed larger vehicles in the future, which could potentially encompass full-size pickups.

Regardless of what unfolds, Nissan and Honda executives have reportedly been meeting regularly since April. While discussions of a merger seem to be off the table, the companies are interested in cooperating in areas that would be mutually beneficial in order to strengthen their relationship.

Nissan is in need of support, as the Canton plant is said to be running at only 57% capacity. Although the facility is expected to produce two new electric crossovers in the future, reports indicate that the launch of both models has recently been delayed by ten months. The Nissan version is now anticipated to arrive in November 2028, while the Infiniti version could follow in March 2029.
