Prototypes of the next-generation BMW X7 have been seen testing on public roads, leading to some confusion about its design.

Slated for production in the latter half of 2027, the 2028 BMW X7 will represent the model’s second generation upon its release. The camouflaged prototypes suggest an evolutionary design, which contrasts with earlier claims from the automaker’s leadership.

Although the prototype’s body panels are concealed, they seem to indicate a production-ready design with a gentler shoulder line than the current X7. The greenhouse and wheelbase appear slightly extended, suggesting a larger X7, though this could be a misinterpretation.

While the front and rear ends do not showcase production lighting, what is visible indicates an updated version of the existing split-headlight configuration with horizontal taillights. The grille size seems to be maintained and may not increase. However, the overall design does not seem to align with the forthcoming Neue Klasse style that BMW has announced will be adopted across all new models. It’s possible that the X7 is too advanced in development to incorporate the Neue Klasse design now, with changes possibly coming in a mid-cycle refresh. In contrast, the upcoming X5 has been seen incorporating EV-like design elements.

As development progresses and camouflage is removed, we will gain a clearer understanding of whether the X7 will align with the Neue Klasse series or continue on its current course.

The next-gen X7 will utilize an updated version of the CLAR platform, which the current X7 shares with the X5. This platform is engineered to support gasoline, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric powertrains, similar to those seen in the 5-Series and 7-Series, which offer various powertrain options. The prototypes seen on the road display an exhaust system with quad tips flanking the rear bumper.

BMW manufactures the X7 at its facility in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The 2028 BMW X7 will remain a U.S.-produced vehicle when it begins production in 2027.
