Let’s take a trip back three years when the electric Chevrolet Corvette was first announced. Since that time, GM has remained silent, and the car's mention has all but vanished, leading many to wonder about its status. Where is it? And why haven't any prototypes been sighted?

In 2022, GM President Mark Reuss appeared on CNBC and informed Phil LeBeau that an electrified Corvette was expected to be released the following year, with an additional electric version to follow after that. No specific timelines were provided.

The electrified Corvette that Reuss referred to was the E-Ray, which he stated would debut in 2023.

However, aside from media inquiries about it, the electric Corvette hasn't been discussed since Reuss's announcement in 2022.

During a media briefing for the 2026 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X, also known as Zora, Motor1 inquired about the timeline for the missing electric Corvette. Corvette Chief Engineer Josh Holder replied, “not soon,” adding, “I never say never.”

The initial response was understandable since no prototypes have been seen of a Corvette without tailpipes or an internal combustion engine. However, the follow-up comment felt odd given that Reuss confirmed the electric Corvette three years earlier.

Chevrolet spokesperson Trevor Thompkins reiterated to The Drive, “To clarify what Josh mentioned, we have stated before that an electric Corvette will be included in the nameplate's lineup in the future, but we have no additional details to share at this time."

It seems highly improbable that GM has concealed the electric Corvette in plain sight, and we simply haven't noticed it. Nevertheless, the automaker did present a Corvette concept design created by a team in Birmingham, England, which is said to be electric. The objective was to design a hypercar version of the Corvette and push limits. The C8 ZR1X has officially elevated the Corvette name into hypercar territory, likely outshining other hypercar manufacturers in terms of pricing when it launches.

With the recent departures of key figures from the Corvette team, there's been speculation regarding whether we have reached the peak of the Corvette line. There will indeed be more Corvettes, including the confirmed electric variant Reuss announced three years ago and reiterated by Thompkins to The Drive.

The pressing question remains: when will it arrive?
