Kia representatives in Australia have hinted that the Tasman truck could lead to the development of a new SUV.

The model might be unveiled in the next three years, although approval hasn’t been granted yet.

If the SUV receives the green light, it would likely face off against the Toyota Prado and Ford Everest.

While the Kia Tasman has an unconventional appearance, the company’s latest pickup could give rise to a robust SUV akin to the Toyota 4Runner or Land Cruiser. This information comes from Australian officials who mentioned that the model could be released before 2029.

According to Carsales, Kia Australia’s Chief Engineer for Ride and Handling stated that a Tasman SUV would debut “three years down the track.” However, Kia Australia’s General Manager of Marketing reportedly countered this by saying, “If Tasman is a success, then it will open many doors, so let’s ensure Tasman is right first.”

This suggests that the company is contemplating an SUV based on the Tasman, although it has not yet been approved. This is not surprising, given that the Tasman is set to launch in Australia in July.

Australia has a strong preference for trucks and SUVs. Data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries reveals that the top-selling vehicles in May were the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger. Additionally, body-on-frame SUVs, such as the Toyota Land Cruiser, Toyota Prado, and Ford Everest, ranked among the ten best-selling vehicles in the country last month.

      Overview of the Tasman

Although the Tasman is facing tough competition from established brands and an influx of Chinese entrants, it has captured considerable attention. Prices start at AU$42,990 ($27,910 USD) and reach AU$74,990 ($48,686 USD) for the top-tier Tasman X-Pro 4x4.

In Australia, the Tasman is being introduced in a Dual Cab format, and all versions will feature a 2.2-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel engine generating 207 hp (154 kW / 209 PS) and 324 lb-ft (440 Nm) of torque. This engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, which can be configured for either rear or four-wheel drive.

The base S trim comes with minimal equipment, but includes steel wheels, an integrated trailer brake controller, and LED headlights. It also features a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch infotainment system, and a 5-inch climate control display.

Higher-end variants offer much more luxury, with the top-tier X-Pro equipped with power front seats that have heating and ventilation functions. This model also includes a Harmon Kardon premium audio system, a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, and a sunroof.
