Germany's motorhome sector has exceeded one million registered vehicles for the first time ever.

As of April 2025, there are 1,002,562 motorhomes registered in Germany. The count of mobile homes has more than doubled in the last five years.

Germany remains the largest market for motorhomes in Europe, followed closely by France.

The enthusiasm for motorhomes in Germany is not just increasing; it has entered a full road trip phase. What started as a niche hobby has evolved into a nationwide phenomenon, with over 1 million motorhomes officially registered as of April 2025. This represents one million vehicles poised to bypass hotels and explore public parking limits.

According to recent data, Germany's motorhome inventory has more than doubled since 2020, now totaling 1,002,562 vehicles. The leading choice for conversions is the Fiat Ducato from Stellantis, which alone constitutes a significant 42.6 percent of the nation's recreational vehicle (RV) market.

An analysis of statistics from Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) indicates a persistent increase in mobile home sales over the past decade, despite a notable surge during the two years of the pandemic. In 2020, sales soared by 41.4 percent, before declining by 17.6 percent in 2022.

Nonetheless, long-term growth remains solid. In 2024, Germany recorded 74,718 new motorhome registrations, nearly tripling (190 percent increase to be precise) compared to the 25,746 units registered in 2014.

      Europe's Largest Motorhome Market

Germany is leading the continent's market significantly. The combined sales of caravans and motorhomes made it Europe’s largest leisure vehicle market in 2024, making up 96,392 out of approximately 221,000 new registrations. This positions Germany ahead of both France and the UK, reinforcing its status as Europe’s capital for rolling homes.

      Most Popular Models and Demographics

The Fiat Ducato continues to dominate the market, with 427,590 units registered in Germany, capturing a substantial 42.6 percent share. It is far ahead of the VW Transporter (13.5 percent), Citroen Jumper (8.6 percent), Ford Transit (6.2 percent), and Mercedes Sprinter (5.6 percent), all competing for the remaining market share.

Unsurprisingly, diesel is the predominant fuel choice. Of all RVs on German roads, 97.4 percent are diesel-powered. Gasoline models represent 2.3 percent, while alternative powertrains remain minimal. Pure electric vehicles account for just 0.00015 percent, hybrids for 0.00010 percent, and plug-in hybrids are even less common at 0.00004 percent.

Motorhome ownership in Germany predominantly appeals to retirees. The largest age group is 60 to 69 years, making up nearly 32 percent of owners. Those in their fifties account for 26.4 percent, while younger drivers are nearly absent, with only 1.7 percent being under 30.
