The Individual Responsible for Ferrari's SF90 Is Now Developing Alpine's Competitor to the SF90 | Carscoops
Philippe Krief, who spearheaded the development of the Ferrari SF90 Stradale, is certainly the ideal person to oversee such an ambitious project.
The new hypercar will feature a V6 engine along with two electric motors, producing a combined output of 1,000 hp. Engineers from Alpine’s Le Mans program have been assigned to develop the powertrain. The French carmaker has indicated that the vehicle will differ from the Alpenglow concept.
Alpine has a definitive goal: to establish itself as a serious player in the high-performance automotive market. As it unveils the A390 electric crossover, the French brand is also teasing something even more thrilling. What’s the exciting news? A hybrid halo supercar, set to compete with Ferrari’s SF90 Stradale and Lamborghini’s Revuelto, is slated for release in 2028. If Alpine aims for mainstream status, this type of vehicle is essential.
The French manufacturer revealed its forthcoming supercar during the A390 premiere this week. The idea for a mid-engine supercar has been in the works since the debut of the Alpenglow concept, and Renault CEO Luca de Meo has finally approved the project.
In contrast to the Revuelto, which boasts a V12 engine, and the SF90 with its V8, the Alpine will feature a smaller V6 engine powering the rear wheels, complemented by two electric motors at the front. Alpine's CEO Philippe Krief stated that the brand aims for approximately 1,000 hp with the hybrid powertrain, ensuring it remains a strong competitor against the Italian brands.
The powertrain is under development by Renault’s Hypertech division, based in the brand’s World Endurance technical center near Paris. The engineers responsible for the A424 Le Mans Hypercar will be tasked with realizing this powertrain. Krief mentioned that the road car will incorporate carbon fiber and aluminum in its construction, as reported by Top Gear.
Few are as well-suited as Krief to lead this project. He played a key role in developing both the 458 Italia and SF90 Stradale at Ferrari, and also held the position of engineering leader for the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio.
“This car has three main objectives,” he told the British magazine. “First, it is to elevate Alpine’s status. This type of car is essential as it boosts the entire lineup. Second, it will serve as a laboratory for innovation, first for the supercar, then for Alpine and subsequently for the whole Group. Third, it will be a solid business venture.”
Since the project is still in its early stages, the exact design of the car remains unknown. Krief noted that it would be “very different” from the Alpenglow concept demonstrated at various racetracks throughout Europe. Nevertheless, considering the carmaker's ability to design an attractive crossover like the A390, we are quite confident they can also create an appealing supercar.
