The Model Y Performance prototype showcases larger wheels and a more aggressive ride height.
This flagship model is anticipated to generate 510 horsepower, capable of accelerating from 0-60 mph in approximately 3.2 seconds.
The pricing for the new Performance variant is projected to begin at around $55,000, with a launch expected by the end of the year.
Tesla's refreshed Juniper Model Y lineup has already rolled out various versions, including the Launch Edition, Rear-Wheel Drive, and Long Range All-Wheel Drive. However, if you're looking for something sportier, the Performance version is next in line. Until now, confirmed prototypes had not been spotted, but that has changed. Our sources captured one testing at the Nurburgring, still covered in camouflage.
That said, it’s advisable not to get too attached to this prototype just yet. This Model Y might not fully reflect the final production version, so some features could be altered before release. Nonetheless, here’s what we can verify from our first look at this electric crossover.
What’s New? Spoilers and Wheels
The most noticeable updates include the extended spoiler on the trunk lid, which closely resembles that of the older Model Y Performance, and the substantial wheels, reminiscent of the Arachnid rims on the Model S Plaid. Although we couldn't confirm the size of the Pirelli P Zero tires, they seem to be 21-inch rims, possibly with a staggered configuration, meaning the rear tires are wider than the front ones.
Interestingly, unlike the Model 3 Performance, which features a completely redesigned front bumper with additional aerodynamic enhancements, this Model Y prototype retains the standard bumper. However, as previously mentioned, this could change before the vehicle is officially produced.
We couldn’t glimpse the interior, but our sources indicate the presence of sport seats in the front with enhanced bolstering, likely taken from its sedan counterpart. The other expected changes over the standard trims include Performance badges and graphics on the infotainment screen, as Tesla tends to keep the design minimal.
Lower Ride Height and Track Features
This prototype also has a lower ride height compared to standard models, which is logical given the performance enhancements. This not only improves handling but also contributes to a more aggressive appearance, especially when paired with the larger wheels. Tesla will also provide an adaptive damper system, akin to the Model 3 Performance, allowing drivers to switch between Standard, Sport, and Track modes.
Additionally, red brake calipers are noticeable, and while there’s no official confirmation yet, we hope these indicate enhanced braking capabilities, ideally preventing overheating after a track lap, a common issue pointed out with the Model 3 Performance. Notably, our sources didn’t observe any significant brake failures or overheating incidents while the car was racing on the Ring. We also anticipate some adjustments to the steering system to enhance responsiveness.
The Actual Performance Aspect
In terms of performance, don’t expect any groundbreaking changes. The Model Y Performance will likely utilize the same dual-motor all-wheel-drive system found in the Model 3 Performance, delivering 510 horsepower and 554 lb-ft of peak torque, paired with a 79 kWh battery. If the sedan's 0-60 mph time of 2.9 seconds (with rollout) is any benchmark, the new Model Y is expected to reach 0-60 in roughly 3.2-3.3 seconds, down from 3.5 seconds in the previous 470-hp Model Y Performance. In terms of range, unless Tesla opts for a larger battery, it should remain around 290 miles per charge.
Release and Pricing
While there’s no official release date (because it's Tesla), we anticipate the production version to debut later this year, likely in the fourth quarter. As for pricing, it's expected to be roughly $7,000-$8,000 above the Long Range AWD model, which starts at $48,990 before any federal tax credits, placing the Model Y Performance around $55,000, give or take.
