A significant fire at Jacksonville Airport resulted in the destruction of 50 cars and a partial collapse of the garage.
The blaze ignited on the second level of the airport’s parking garage, but the reason for the fire is still undetermined.
There have been no reported injuries; however, the garage is currently closed for extensive cleaning and investigation.
A fire has inflicted serious damage on approximately 50 vehicles at Jacksonville International Airport in Florida, after sweeping through a large parking garage. The incident compelled the airport to shut down for several hours, initiating a major clean-up and repair operation that could take weeks. Meanwhile, many drivers find themselves without their cars, and insurance companies are already preparing for challenges.
The fire is believed to have started with one car. While the type of vehicle involved has not been identified, speculation has arisen, particularly concerning electric vehicles, given similar incidents in parking garages over the last few years.
Security footage reportedly indicates that the fire began on the second level and rapidly expanded. Its intensity led to a partial collapse of the second and third floors, with another collapse occurring approximately 30 minutes later, according to reports from Jacksonville.
The garage, which offers hourly parking, is located directly across from the main terminal, providing approximately 1,200 parking spaces. Images posted on Facebook by the Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department reveal that many vehicles are left as charred remains, including several SUVs.
On Sunday, the Jacksonville Aviation Authority confirmed that the hourly garage is still closed.
“The Hourly Garage remains closed. Officials have designated a collapse zone,” they stated. “Currently, only authorized personnel can access the garage. All other individuals are prohibited from entering this area for safety reasons. Teams are working to identify safe sections of the garage where vehicles may be removed. We anticipate that certain areas will be declared safe and cleared later this week.”
There have been no injury reports, and the garage's closure has compelled travelers to use alternative parking options throughout the airport. A detailed investigation is currently in progress to ascertain the cause of the fire.
