BMW has unveiled a new concept, which appears to be a shooting brake variant of the Skytop.

This unnamed model made its debut through shadowy teasers, hinting at a style reminiscent of last year’s limited-production Skytop. It is anticipated to be officially revealed this weekend at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este.

Hints from BMW suggest that the new concept could resemble a Shooting Brake iteration of the Skytop study. The automaker has released several enigmatic images on social media, providing just enough details to pique interest.

The teaser showcases the rear, highlighting a sleek roofline and a sculpted tail with very slim LED lights. The contoured rear fenders and fin-shaped door handles align with those from the BMW Skytop convertible, though the overall shape resembles a shooting brake. However, the extended wheelbase suggests the proportions may not be as striking as seen in the Z4-based Concept Touring Coupe from 2023.

BMW characterizes this model as “a unique blend of design, elegance, and precise craftsmanship”, suggesting it is a coachbuilt special. The automaker used terms like dynamic, elegant, and exotic, noting that the vehicle is “built to move hearts and corners.”

Similar to the Skytop, the new concept will likely be based on the G15 BMW 8-Series platform, which is approaching the end of its production run. It may share the same twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine found in the M8 Competition, delivering a robust 617 hp (460 kW / 625 PS).

While details remain sparse, it is expected that this new concept will debut at the 2025 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, held in Lake Como from May 24-26. If you’re considering a last-minute trip to Italy to witness the unveiling, now could be a good time to plan your flight.

The BMW Skytop was first shown at the 2024 edition of this event, transitioning from concept to a limited run of 50 units, which sold out quickly despite reports of a $500k price tag. Given the positive reception of the original, it’s likely that BMW aims to produce this exotic shooting brake at a similarly impressive price.

In a recent interview, Sylvia Neubauer, BMW M’s Vice President of customers, brand, and sales, hinted that the Skytop will be succeeded by more limited-edition vehicles: “BMW’s strategy is to feature a series of small-series models that we will introduce to the market. There will be something showcased at Villa d’Este this year, along with potentially more future small-series models with the ‘M’ designation.”
