Have you ever wanted to experience the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix but felt left out? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. There’s good news for iPhone users: starting today, we can explore the iconic street circuit through Apple Maps, coinciding with the upcoming F1 movie featuring Brad Pitt.
Thanks to Apple’s “Detailed City Experience (DCE),” users can get a virtual tour of some of the most famous landmarks in this tiny country. This includes custom-designed 3D representations of the Casino de Monte-Carlo, Fairmont Monte Carlo, Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo, Yacht Club de Monaco, and the F1 Paddock Club. You’ll even find miniature yachts in the well-known Port Hercules, with the ability to spot details like grandstands and gantries. Plus, if your iPhone is set to dark mode (and whose isn’t?), the buildings and boats will illuminate the night.
However, this feature isn’t just for entertainment. The DCE also includes detailed road and lane markings, trees, and signs for bus and bike lanes, medians, specific turning lanes, and indications of road closures with detours during the race. Essentially, it enhances the navigation experience in Charles Leclerc’s hometown, making it easier to navigate, especially if you're walking and can zoom in on the map for specific details.
Additionally, Apple Maps introduces a Windshield View, aimed more at assisting drivers than pedestrians. This feature “presents a road-level view as users approach complex interchanges, helping them anticipate traffic conditions or identify the best lane for upcoming exits.” While this capability has been implemented in other cities, Apple didn’t provide images for this case, so we can only imagine the experience of being on the ground in Apple's simulated version of Monte Carlo.
This feature is available starting today, but you'll need to update your iOS device to version 18.5 to access it. With the actual Monaco Grand Prix taking place on May 25 and the release of Apple’s Brad Pitt film on June 27, it’s clear that the tech giant is putting in efforts to pique interest in F1.
