Global Sales of Electrified Vehicles Rise Nearly 30% This Year | Carscoops
Sales remained robust in April, though there was a slight decrease compared to the previous month.
A total of 5.6 million electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) have been sold in the first four months of 2025.
China is still at the forefront, having sold 3.3 million battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and PHEVs this year.
In North America, sales have reached 600,000 units, growing at a slower pace of 5%.
Despite the uncertainty stemming from newly introduced tariffs, sales of electrified vehicles continue to soar, with BEVs and PHEVs selling at record rates. Markets such as China and Europe are experiencing even more remarkable growth alongside North America.
As noted last month, global sales of BEVs and PHEVs had already exceeded 4.1 million in the first three months of the year. With the figures from April included, the total for the first four months is a remarkable 5.6 million units, according to data from RhoMotion.
In April alone, 1.5 million electrified vehicles were sold, reflecting a 29 percent increase compared to the same month last year. However, it is important to note a slight decline of 12 percent from March, which may indicate that the initial rush to buy before the full effects of the tariffs began to be felt has diminished.
Continuing to spearhead the market is China, with 3.3 million BEVs and PHEVs sold this year, showing a 35% increase from last year. Sales in April fell by 9% compared to the prior month, but were up 32% compared to April 2024.
It’s important to note that the US and China have recently announced a reduction in tariffs, including some eliminations and suspensions for 90 days. However, this change mainly pertains to parts within the automotive sector, as President Biden's previously implemented electric vehicle tariffs remain unchanged.
Across the Atlantic, North America is experiencing steady growth, though it is not explosive. Sales have reached approximately 600,000 vehicles this year, a 5% rise compared to last year. While specific breakdowns for the US, Canada, and Mexico are not available, reports indicate that sales in Mexico have nearly doubled year-to-date.
EV & PHEV Sales JAN-APR
After a challenging 2024 for EV and PHEV sales in Europe, the outlook is significantly more positive this year. In just the first four months, sales have surged by 25%, totaling 1.2 million vehicles. BEVs are leading the way with a 29% year-to-date increase, outpacing the 16% growth in PHEVs. Germany (+42%), Italy (+56%), Spain (+57%), and the UK (+32%) are all experiencing substantial sales increases. In contrast, France is facing difficulties, with a 14% decline in sales this year, primarily due to reductions in consumer incentives.
As Charles Lester, Rho Motion’s data manager, remarks, “While ongoing tariff negotiations are dominating conversations in the electric vehicle sector, domestic manufacturers in China and the EU continue to thrive and expand their market share.”
