Despite a significant decline in EV sales, Ford’s overall deliveries have risen this year.

Ford reported selling 4,859 EVs this year, a decrease from 8,014 sold in April 2024. Year-to-date sales are down 2.9% compared to last year.

The demand for the Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning, and E-Transit has also decreased.

Ford is investing tens of billions of dollars into electric vehicles, taking a considerable risk on a future that is already unfolding, but the results thus far have not been promising. While the overall EV market continues to expand, Ford's electric sales are declining. If the automaker in Dearborn aims to compete effectively with rivals like GM and Hyundai-Kia, and potentially challenge Tesla’s lead, it must find a way to enhance its local EV sales promptly.

An examination of Ford’s latest sales figures reveals a troubling scenario for the company. In April, Ford sold 4,859 EVs nationwide, reflecting a significant 39.4% drop from the 8,014 units sold in April last year. Total EV sales for the first four months of 2025 are also down 2.9% year-over-year, with 27,409 units sold. This decline occurs despite Ford's extended Employee Pricing discounts available to all customers.

A substantial decrease in demand for the Mustang Mach-E primarily accounts for the fall in Ford's sales last month. In April, 2,927 Mustang Mach-Es were sold, down 40.2% from the 4,893 sold in April 2024. However, year-to-date sales have increased by 0.4%, totaling 14,534.

Sales of the F-150 Lightning have similarly dipped. In April 2024, Ford sold 2,090 units, while this year only 1,740 units were sold. Year-to-date sales have fallen by 9.2%, totaling 8,927. The E-Transits faced a particularly poor month with just 192 sales, a decrease of 81.5%.

In contrast to its EVs, Ford’s hybrid models are experiencing growth. In April, the company sold 23,331 hybrid vehicles, marking a 29.6% increase from the previous year. Year-to-date hybrid sales have risen 31.9%, with 74,404 units sold in 2025 so far.

Apart from EVs, Ford is performing well. In April, total vehicle sales surged 16.2% compared to the same month in 2024, reaching 208,675 units compared to 179,588 last year.

Excluding EVs, Ford’s overall sales have risen in the first four months of the year, even amidst industry challenges triggered by the implementation of Trump’s tariffs. Year-to-date, Ford has sold 709,966 vehicles in the US, a 3.2% increase over the 687,671 units delivered in 2024.
