Mazda has opted not to release the Miata 35th Anniversary Edition in Europe, prompting a Belgian dealer to take initiative. Mazda St-Michel in Brussels collaborated with Gisèle Racing, a customization shop, to create a special commemorative Miata for the European market, and it certainly stands out.

This unofficial anniversary model, named Tōji—which translates to Winter Solstice in Japanese—is limited to just 12 units. Unlike the Pontiac Solstice, this refers to the actual Solstice that signifies the longest night of the year. It is based on the European-spec Miata, featuring a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, and draws design inspiration from the Cosmos Sport 110S, the first production car to utilize a rotary engine.

In terms of aesthetics, the Tōji is dressed in Artisan Red and features two-tone 17-inch wheels reminiscent of the BBS wheels seen on various Miata generations. It is equipped with a Bilstein suspension, enhancing its handling capabilities. The interior boasts houndstooth inserts on both the seats and dashboard, establishing a visual connection to the Cosmos Sport 110S, which debuted in 1967. A wooden steering wheel and shift knob sourced from REAL Japan provide a refined touch, neither of which are found in the official 35th Anniversary model.

However, there is a trade-off concerning power. The only engine available in Belgium is the previously mentioned 1.5-liter, which produces approximately 132 horsepower and 112 lb-ft of torque. In comparison, the American version of the Miata comes with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 181 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque.

Pricing details have yet to be revealed, but it’s not particularly relevant for us since the Tōji will not be offered in the United States. Nonetheless, it’s an attractive Miata, and it’s nice to see the concept of dealer-designed limited-edition models quietly re-emerging in Europe.
