The upcoming M3 will prioritize driving dynamics and is set to be released in the next two years.

BMW’s Head of Neue Klasse has confirmed that the next M3 will be available in both electric and internal combustion engine (ICE) variants.

The gasoline version will introduce a "new type of six-cylinder engine," appealing to traditional enthusiasts.

While both models will feature similar styling, the electric version, the iM3, may take the lead in performance.

BMW has been hinting at the i3 / 3-Series Neue Klasse for several months, and they are now prepared to discuss the next-generation M3, which is expected to launch within the next two years as both an electric and ICE model.

This development was anticipated, but BMW’s Dr. Mike Reichelt recently confirmed it to Top Gear. He stated, “We’re … going to offer it with a new type of six-cylinder engine, as we recognize that it may be premature for some dedicated M fans to transition.” However, he expressed confidence that the fully electric M3 will reach new heights and attract different target audiences due to its distinct behavior.

Additionally, BMW’s Neue Klasse head mentioned that both the electric and ICE versions of the M3 will feature “the same design and digital attributes.” Nevertheless, the focus isn't solely on 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) acceleration times.

Instead, the company is concentrating on driving dynamics, which is where their Heart of Joy system comes into play. Although the name may seem like a questionable marketing tactic, BMW has explained that it’s a control unit managing the powertrain, brakes, steering, and recuperation system. While it may not seem groundbreaking, the Heart of Joy processes information ten times quicker than its predecessors.

This system aims to provide a “whole new level of speed and precision,” offering a more integrated relationship between the various components. The interaction between the powertrain, brakes, and energy recuperation system means that drivers often won’t need to apply the brakes in most circumstances, potentially increasing efficiency by up to 25%.

Returning to the interview, Reichelt mentioned that drivers will be able to “enter a corner at a certain steering angle without needing to adjust mid-corner.” This could be viewed positively or negatively, depending on individual preferences for driving purity.
