Slate, the new electric vehicle company rumored to have the backing of Jeff Bezos, aims to transform the pickup truck market with an electric model priced below $20,000 after federal incentives. This price point would make the Truck—its simply named vehicle—the most economical new pickup available in the U.S. Additionally, it will be the smallest; measuring around 174 inches in length, the Slate's first model is over 20 inches shorter than the already compact Ford Maverick.

Available solely as a single-cab (with an optional DIY SUV Kit that can add an enclosed rear and seating), the Truck measures 174.6 inches long, 70.6 inches wide (excluding mirrors), and 69.3 inches tall, riding on a 108.9-inch wheelbase. For comparison, the Maverick is one of the tiniest new pickups on the market, at 199.8 inches long, 72.6 inches wide, and 68.5 inches tall. In other terms, a single-cab Maverick would be roughly the same dimensions as Slate’s Truck.

Slate Truck vs. 2025 Ford Maverick

      The Slate is…

Length: 174.6 inches vs. 199.8 inches (25.2 inches shorter)

Width (excluding mirrors): 70.6 inches vs. 72.6 inches (2 inches narrower)

Height: 69.3 inches vs. 68.5 inches (0.8 inches taller)

Wheelbase: 108.9 inches vs. 121.1 inches (12.2 inches shorter between wheels)

Like many other vehicles, trucks have significantly increased in size in recent years, making it necessary to look back to the 1980s to find one comparable to the Slate. Do you remember the original Ford Ranger from 1983? It was a boxy model that measured 175 inches in length and had a 108-inch wheelbase with a standard bed, though it offered less interior space at 67 inches wide compared to Slate’s pickup.

Even the second-generation Ranger was longer than the new Slate Truck, measuring about 184 inches at its shortest. The current-generation Ranger, on the other hand, exceeds 200 inches in length regardless of configuration, and the F-150 measures 209 inches with a regular cab.

Even the wedge-shaped Dodge Rampage was approximately 10 inches longer than the electric Truck. In Europe, where pickups have also grown larger in recent years, there isn't anything that matches the Slate’s size. However, a somewhat similar model available in Mexico is the Ram 700, which is essentially a badge-engineered Fiat Strada. This unibody, car-based pickup measures 176 inches long and 69 inches wide.

The Truck's compact size could be advantageous for Slate, essentially placing it in a category by itself. There's no need for a heavy-duty F-350 Super Duty to tow a lawnmower or transport a few hundred pounds of mulch. Moreover, it surprisingly offers practicality given its size—at least on paper. The bed measures 42.9 inches wide between the wheel arches and 60 inches long. In comparison, the Maverick's bed is 42.6 inches wide and 54.4 inches long. Slate claims a payload capacity of 1,433 pounds and a towing capacity of 1,000 pounds, while Ford states the Maverick can handle up to 1,500 pounds and tow up to 2,000 pounds, which can be increased to 4,000 pounds with the 4K Tow Package.

Bed Volume: 37 cubic feet vs. 33.3 cubic feet (3.7-cubic-foot larger bed)

Max Payload: 1,433 pounds vs. 1,500 pounds (67 pounds less)

Max Towing: 1,000 pounds vs. 2,000 pounds (with 4K Tow Package: 4,000 pounds, 1,000-3,000 pounds less)
