If you were to travel back to the year 2000 and inform someone that in 25 years, Toyota and Lexus would be at the forefront of manufacturing cars in a traditional manner, they would likely think you were either A) fabricating your story or B) completely out of your mind. Or perhaps a combination of both? Yet, here we are in 2025, and Lexus is presenting a brand-new sedan. Is the world really upside down, or is it just my perception? I’m open to either explanation.

As peculiar as it may seem, this is not a figment of the imagination. Lexus is indeed pursuing this initiative, and while a significant change in the philosophy behind the midsize ES isn't anticipated, it’s clear that Toyota’s luxury brand is aiming to draw in younger buyers with its new design. From certain perspectives, it appears sleek—even eye-catching—but the front end incorporates some unusual elements that suit the Toyota Prius much better.

The interior has been entirely revamped as well. The contrasting wood accents in the doors are a nice addition, but overall, I am struck by how minimal it appears. Perhaps Lexus is targeting those who appreciate Tesla’s minimalist style, yet it’s debatable whether this cabin will resonate with the conventional premium customer. For example, the steering wheel resembles a single piece of molded plastic with some keypads affixed to it, and at a glance, it looks akin to what you would see in a carnival bumper car. At least it isn’t a yoke, right?

The gas-powered ES has been discontinued for this generation, meaning the car will only come as a hybrid or a fully electric vehicle, with offerings for both front- or all-wheel drive. The base ES 350h hybrid is powered by Toyota’s 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, but if you opt for the battery-electric version, the 350e is driven by a single front motor, while the 500e features an additional rear motor. Lexus has yet to disclose performance expectations for any of these variants, but anticipate that the dual-motor 500e will deliver considerably greater power than the 350e.

Lexus indicates that the 2026 ES will be available for sale next year, so there’s ample time for more details to emerge.
