Street-Legal Porsche 962C Available for Sale: The Ultimate Way to Stand Out at Cars and Coffee
If arriving at cars and coffee in an air-cooled 911 feels a bit too ordinary, and you have just over a million dollars to spend, there's a vintage Porsche on the market that will surely elevate your status among enthusiasts. It's a 1988 962C with a well-documented racing history, and you won't even need a trailer. Although this vehicle was built strictly for racing, it is now street-legal.
Designated chassis number CK6-88, this 962C participated in the 1988 season of the FIA World Sports Prototype Championship, the FIA Coupe d’Europe Interserie, and the FIA World Challenge. Its racing background is notable. Danish driver Kris Nissen achieved victories at the Hungaroring, Hockenheimring, and Wunstorf in Germany, and it finished 9th overall in the 1988 24 Hours of Le Mans.
American collector John Wrengler acquired this 962C in 1990, using it for occasional races to utilize its 3.0-liter, twin-turbo flat-six engine before selling it in 2001. The car found its way to the United Kingdom, where it remains as of 2009, and has since taken part in numerous races, including a notable appearance by Derek Bell at the Le Mans Classic in 2012. It has also been featured at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and the Goodwood Members’ Meeting.
Fully restored, this 962C is eligible for a wide range of vintage races, such as Le Mans Classic, Peter Auto Group C, and the 2025 Masters Group C Series, but the impressive part is that it is also street-legal. Registering it for road use was quite challenging since the 962C was never intended for street legality. In the 1990s, some firms converted 962s for road use, but those modifications typically required significant alterations to the car's body and chassis, and none retained their original racing liveries, unlike this one.
In this instance, the Coventry-based company BBM Sport handled the conversion, which included adding a parking brake, larger cooling fans, and a headset intercom that allows communication between the driver and passenger. BBM Sport also equipped it with a traction control system to manage the engine’s 750-horsepower output. This 962C was finally registered for road use in April 2022.
Since then, it has traveled many miles on public roads, including a journey from the UK to Germany and back, stopping at the Porsche museum in Stuttgart. Picture being in the right lane of the autobahn and having a 962C zoom past you at full throttle!
If a street-legal 962C sounds like the ideal summer cruiser for you, contact Joe Macari, the London-based exotic car dealership. The asking price is £999,950, which is approximately $1.3 million at the current exchange rate, and the sale comes with historical documentation and spare parts. While that’s a significant sum, it’s relatively reasonable considering the car's impressive pedigree.
