The Volkswagen ID Buzz, inspired by retro design, is among the most delightful VW models since the introduction of the New Beetle in 1998. Just take a look at it: it exudes happiness, doesn’t take itself too seriously, and brings joy to everyone who sees it. However, being a large van, it was inevitable that it would be used for traditional van purposes, even if they aren't all that cheerful. In Texas, there’s a funeral home that believes the ID Buzz serves as the ideal hearse.

Managed by Perches Funeral Home in El Paso, the electric hearse resembles a typical ID Buzz. It is painted black, as one might expect, and features decorative inserts on its rear side windows. Inside, the main change appears to be the installation of a casket platform in place of the rear seats. Overall, it seems quite straightforward to prepare the Buzz for funeral service.

Autrey McVicker of BMP tuning graciously shared these photos of the build, showcasing remarkable attention to detail.

It’s somewhat peculiar to see a hearse built on the Buzz platform, and it highlights that vans aren’t commonly used for this purpose, despite their suitability. Many hearses in the U.S. are still customized Cadillac station wagon types. However, electric power offers a quiet and respectful means of transporting the deceased. Furthermore, options for electric vans in the U.S. are limited. Ram produces an electric version of the Promaster, while Ford has an electric Transit. Another alternative is Rivian’s electric van exclusively for fleets, but it’s quite large and its cheerful design would be inappropriate for a funeral. Unlike the Tesla-based hearses, the ID Buzz requires minimal body modifications to accommodate a casket.

Perches is not the sole company that envisioned the Buzz as a suitable hearse. German coachbuilder Kuhlmann Cars also offers a Buzz-based hearse with modifications similar to this one. In a way, these conversions emphasize the fact that the Buzz pays homage to the classic rear-engine Buses. Several coachbuilders transformed vintage Buses into hearses during the 1950s and 1960s.

We’re uncertain if this was what Volkswagen envisioned when it created the spacious interior of the Buzz.
