The compact electric vehicle completed the iconic Top Gear test track in an impressive 55.9 seconds.
McMurtry’s Spéirling was 13 seconds faster than the Aston Martin Valkyrie.
The electric vehicle’s fan system generates 2,000 kg (4,400 lbs) of downforce while stationary.
The McMurtry Spéirling Pure stands out as a unique car in the world. Notably, it also set a new overall lap record on the Top Gear Test Track with incredible ease. Although the British EV has a quirky appearance, its performance capabilities are undeniable.
Top Gear managed to acquire the Spéirling Pure and anticipated its speed. However, it was uncertain if it could break the record set by the Renault R24 Formula 1 car, which completed the track in 59.0 seconds back in 2004. The McMurtry not only surpassed that record but obliterated it, finishing a lap in just 55.9 seconds.
Watch: McMurtry Spéirling Makes History by Driving Upside Down
The acceleration and cornering ability of the Spéirling are astonishing. It reaches 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 1.5 seconds and can navigate corners faster and more aggressively than a Formula 1 car. Its advanced fan system produces 2,000 kg (4,400 lbs) of downforce even at a standstill. The Pure version is even crazier than the original prototype, which broke the Goodwood hillclimb record a few years ago.
It comes equipped with wider slick tires at both the front and rear and can generate more than 3G in cornering forces. It delivers 999 hp, is powered by a 60 kWh battery pack, weighs a mere 2,200 lbs (1,000 kg), and has a top speed of 190 mph (306 km/h). Although The Stig could not reach the Spéirling's maximum speed at the track, he managed to get it up to 177 mph (285 km/h).
Watching the onboard footage might make you feel as if you’re viewing a sped-up video game. The grip it provides is extraordinary, with the McMurtry launching out of every corner like a rocket.
To put the car’s performance into context, it not only surpassed a 2004 F1 car but also cut 13 seconds from the Aston Martin Valkyrie's time, which had previously held the record for the fastest road-legal car ever tested by Top Gear with a time of 1:09.6.
