Bentley’s More Affordable Continental GT Hybrids Are Still Entry-Level Exclusively For Millionaires | Carscoops
The latest "entry-level" Bentley models deliver impressive performance, along with a commendable electric range.
The base Continental GT can accelerate to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.7 seconds. Bentley’s plug-in hybrid V8 offers the trio up to 53 miles (85 km) of electric driving range. New Azure models have been introduced to the lineup, showcasing unique styling.
If you’ve been considering a Bentley but don’t require the massive power of a 771-horsepower engine, there's positive news: the brand has now introduced a slightly more restrained yet still powerful option for its Continental GT, Continental GT Convertible, and Flying Spur models.
Bentley’s new High Performance Hybrid powertrain sits just below the Speed and Mulliner variants, providing a more balanced combination of luxury and electrified performance. Don’t underestimate the ‘hybrid’ label, though.
This system combines a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 with an electric motor, producing a total of 671 horsepower and 686 lb-ft (930 Nm) of torque. Although it falls short by 100 horses compared to the flagship plug-in V8, this new ‘entry-level’ powertrain still outshines the older W12 engine from the previous generation Speed models.
In straight-line performance, the new Continental GT with this 671-hp hybrid setup can reach 62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.7 seconds, while the slightly heavier Continental GT Convertible takes 3.9 seconds. The Flying Spur also requires 3.9 seconds to achieve the same speed.
Importantly, drivers will be able to enjoy quiet rides, with the standard GT capable of 53 miles (85 km) on electric power alone, while the GTC offers 51 miles (82 km) of silent operation.
Along with the launch of the new powertrain, Bentley has released new Azure versions of all three models. These come equipped with a sleek gloss black matrix grille featuring a chrome surround and 11 vertical slats as standard. Additionally, Bentley has added a new black front splitter and designed a stylish set of 22-inch wheels.
The Continental GT, GTC, and Flying Spur Azure models include Bentley’s ‘Wellness’ seating, which offers heated, ventilated, and massage functions. They also feature new embroidered headrests, mood lighting, and open-pore crown cut walnut veneer trim. Illuminated treadplates have been included, along with standard Touring, Comfort, and Lighting Specification packages. Convertible models come with an integrated neck warmer, enabling drivers to enjoy the open air even in colder weather.
Pricing information has not yet been revealed, but models featuring this new High Performance Hybrid powertrain are anticipated to be around £35,000 (~$44,700) less than their counterparts with the 771 hp engine, with a starting price of £202,400 in the UK.
