The original manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) for this i5 was $77,695, which included multiple premium option packages. The vehicle experienced a depreciation of $31,445 within just a few months.

      Depreciation is a well-known aspect of owning EVs and luxury German cars. Nevertheless, even experienced automotive enthusiasts might be surprised by how rapidly certain high-end electric vehicles lose their value. For instance, consider the 2024 BMW i5 eDrive40; it has already depreciated by an eye-watering $31,445, despite having only 714 miles on the odometer. This is a vehicle that is barely past its break-in period.

      Recently, the i5 was auctioned on Cars & Bids, fetching a price of $46,250. This is an incredible bargain for an all-electric German sedan of such caliber and is significantly lower than its original MSRP of $77,695. While we empathize with the original owner, the winning bidder appears to have secured a fantastic deal. However, it is quite likely that the vehicle will continue to depreciate rapidly.

      The i5 in question is the eDrive40, which is the entry-level model in BMW’s electric 5-Series collection. It comes equipped with an 81 kWh battery that powers a single electric motor, producing 335 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. BMW claims that this configuration should provide approximately 295 miles of range on a full charge when paired with the optional 20-inch wheels featured here. Even in its base variant, the eDrive40 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in a commendable 5.7 seconds, without any allowances for Tesla enthusiasts.

      This specific i5, however, is far from a stripped-down version. The window sticker indicates that it includes the M Sport Package, M Sport Package Pro, and Premium Package, which enhance the vehicle with features such as a heated steering wheel, an interior camera, LED cornering lights, and a head-up display. Additionally, it has the Driving Assistance Pro Package and Connected Package Pro, which offer real-time traffic updates, remote services from BMW, and information about on-street parking.

      Given that the car has barely been utilized, with just over 700 miles on it, its condition is excellent. The only noticeable imperfections are a few minor scratches on the trunk lid, which can easily be remedied with a bit of polishing. Otherwise, the vehicle is essentially new.

      While aesthetics differ from person to person, we can’t say we are thrilled with the design of the current i5 or its gasoline-powered 5-Series counterparts. Nonetheless, this may be easier to overlook when the price has been reduced by more than 40 percent. So, the real question is: would you be willing to spend $46,000 like this buyer did on an almost-new electric BMW with all its features, even if it may continue to lose value?
