      Legacy Overland has completely rebuilt a 1987 Land Rover Defender with a host of modern upgrades.

      The rusty chassis was restored using new body panels and finished in Mooreland Gray Blue paint.

      Contemporary enhancements include heated leather seats, Apple CarPlay, and upgraded suspension components.

      The Land Rover Defender has evolved significantly from its basic, off-road origins, yet not everyone is excited about this change. To be clear, the current Land Rover Defender is an exceptional vehicle. It offers the comfort and refinement of a luxury SUV on the road, along with considerable off-road capability to match. However, it lacks the rugged, utilitarian allure that characterized the original model. Consequently, it’s no surprise that restomods of classic Defenders are experiencing a boom in popularity.

      Among the companies revitalizing these iconic vehicles, Legacy Overland stands out. Their latest project is a 1987 Defender 110, which, despite beginning its life as a rusty shell, is now arguably more appealing than any new model coming from a Land Rover showroom today.

      When it reached the restomod facility, it was heavily rusted and required complete disassembly. The chassis has been entirely rebuilt, featuring all-new body panels. Essentially, it is a brand-new vehicle finished in the striking Mooreland Gray Blue metallic paint.

      Rebuilt From the Ground Up

      As part of this transformation, Legacy has rebuilt the Land Rover 300 TDI diesel engine and the ZF four-speed automatic transmission. Additionally, both front and rear differentials have been refurbished, and a new set of 18-inch wheels fitted with BF Goodrich all-terrain tires have been added. All-new suspension components and modern brakes have also been installed.

      The interior of this Defender clearly differs from the original one as well. It includes new heated front seats and a rear bench seat. The dashboard, center console, and door panels are now finished in black leather, and an aftermarket audio system has been installed along with a double-din Sony system featuring Apple CarPlay. The vehicle also sports a new steering wheel, bright red gauges, and updated switchgear.

      Modern off-road vehicles are more sophisticated than ever, arriving from the factory with innovative features and cutting-edge technologies that facilitate conquering challenging terrain. However, one of the most enjoyable aspects of off-roading is the opportunity to do things yourself, such as mastering throttle, braking, and steering inputs on tough trails.

      This Defender achieves that unique balance. It preserves the analog experience while providing just enough modern convenience to enhance the ride. And honestly, what more could one desire from a classic 4×4?
