In the event of a lightning strike, being in your car may not be the worst place to be. The metal frame of a car functions as a Faraday cage, directing electrical energy around the exterior, down through the tires, and into the ground. As long as you avoid touching anything metal connected to the outside of the vehicle, you should be protected. However, this isn’t entirely accurate, as a severe lightning strike can damage a car’s electrical systems, rupture rubber components, and shatter glass, among other potential issues. A family in Illinois experienced this firsthand when lightning struck their Ford Edge last week.
The family reported that the vehicle was in motion when it was hit, resulting in "a loud gunshot-like noise" and smoke filling the inside, according to the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office. The three passengers exited the car, likely to assess the situation and wait for the authorities, which may not have been the safest choice. In the rare event that lightning strikes again, staying inside the car remains the safest option, even if some damage has already occurred.
Upon the police's arrival, they observed that the rear bumper of the Edge was detached at the edges, with the lower trim blown away, revealing wires. The passenger-side taillight was also missing, and the only indication of the cause was a distinct burn mark where the small aerial of the SUV is usually located. The electrical systems were damaged, and law enforcement stated that the vehicle needed to be towed from its position on the highway shoulder.
This situation must have been quite frightening for the family, but thankfully, no one was injured, and it wasn't more severe. No glass was broken in this incident, and while lightning can ignite fuel and oil, leading to fires, that didn't occur here. The Edge certainly took a hit. And for those who might claim otherwise, it's important to clarify that traditional gas-powered vehicles are just as vulnerable during a storm as electric vehicles; the same principles apply to both types.
