The powerful JAC Hunter features a 516-hp 2.0-liter turbo hybrid engine.

Foton is set to introduce two full-size pickups, the Tunland V7 and V9.

Foton's trucks began sales in South America towards the end of 2024.

Last week, two new pickup trucks from Chinese manufacturers debuted in Australia, reigniting the competition for a share of one of the country's most challenging vehicle markets. The JAC Hunter PHEV and the Foton Tunland bring contrasting strategies to utility and performance.

Although these new models are unlikely to reach the US market, they illustrate the commitment of Chinese brands to enhance their presence in global pickup markets.

The JAC Hunter represents a more upscale version of the existing T9 platform, aimed at competing with models such as the BYD Shark 6 and, with some ambition, the Ford Ranger Raptor. It features an eye-catching design with darkened elements, flared fenders, and a rear sports bar, giving it a commanding look to rival both the BYD and the Ford. It also boasts impressive power.

      Plug-In Power With Impressive Stats

The Hunter is equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine paired with an electric motor on both the front and rear axles. Together, they generate an impressive 516 hp (385 kW) and 737 lb-ft (1,000 Nm) of torque. For context, the BYD Shark 6 produces 430 hp (321 kW) and 479 lb-ft (650 Nm), while the traditional Ranger Raptor has 391 hp (282 kW) and 430 lb-ft (583 Nm) according to Australian specifications.

JAC claims that the 31.2 kWh battery provides up to 100 km (62 miles) of all-electric driving range, and it features a vehicle-to-load function that allows the truck to serve as a mobile power source. However, details on payload, towing capacity, and pricing remain unknown—three important factors that could significantly impact its appeal in a market that values workhorse capabilities.

      Foton Enters the Fray

Joining the JAC Hunter in the expanding pickup market in Australia are the Tunland V7 and V9 models from Foton. Known primarily as a commercial truck manufacturer, Foton believes it can hold its own against the competition with its full-size pickups.

While many critical specifications for the Tunland models are still undisclosed, the standard V7 is promoted as a practical “no-nonsense workhorse,” while the V9 offers enhanced suspension and luxury features, making it more suitable for on-road performance. Sales of the V7 and V9 began last year in multiple international markets, including South America.

Both Tunland models are powered by a 2.0-liter turbo-diesel engine combined with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, producing 161 hp (120 kW) and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm) of torque. Although full specifications for Australia have yet to be confirmed, they are expected to align with these performance figures.
