Toyota may have been the most searched brand over the past three years, but the Honda Civic has emerged as the most sought-after model during that time.

The Honda Civic led Google searches in the U.S. from 2022 to 2025, surpassing all other models. Following closely behind in interest were the Ford Bronco, Model Y, and Highlander.

In terms of overall brand searches, Toyota took the lead, while Tesla and Honda ranked second and third, respectively.

Despite the abundance of trucks and SUVs filling suburban driveways, the beloved Honda Civic continues to resonate with Americans, at least in search trends. Over the past three years, it has been the most popular car model searched in the U.S., reaffirming that factors like practicality, reliability, and fuel efficiency retain their appeal amidst a market flooded with Cybertrucks and expensive electric vehicles.

Honda also made its mark beyond model searches, securing third place among the most searched automakers, right behind Toyota and Tesla.

This information is derived from a recent U.S. study examining Google search trends from January 2022 to January 2025. While Toyota maintained its position at the top of brand searches, Tesla followed closely, which is expected given the company's extensive media coverage related to its car launches, rockets, and social media activities. Honda came in third, ahead of brands like Ram, Ford, Hyundai, BMW, Kia, Subaru, and Mercedes-Benz.

Although Toyota and Tesla predictably led in overall brand searches, it was the Civic that stood out as the most searched individual model. In the second position was the Ford Bronco, highlighting the enduring appeal of nostalgia and boxy designs.

Many models from Toyota and Tesla ranked among the most searched as anticipated. The Model Y took third place, followed by the Highlander, Model 3, and RAV4. The Camry and Tacoma were also listed among the most searched models. Interestingly, we would have expected the Cybertruck to be in the top 15, but it was absent from the study.

Americans Have a Soft Spot for Subarus

Extreme Terrain's study also looked at the most searched car brands by state, revealing some intriguing insights. Subaru was the most searched brand in 28% of U.S. states, leading the pack significantly. It topped searches in states like Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, Minnesota, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Alaska, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.

Ford ranked as the most searched brand in 18% of states, such as Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, Kansas, Missouri, and Michigan. Chevrolet was the leading brand in only four states, GMC in six, Ram in two, and Nissan, Honda, BMW, and Mercedes in two states each, while Porsche, Lexus, Hyundai, VW, Tesla, and Land Rover were the top searches in one state each.

In terms of specific vehicles, the Subaru Legacy was the most searched car in 14% of states, followed by the GMC Terrain and other notable models like the BMW 5-Series, Chevrolet Silverado, Kia K5, and Toyota Land Cruiser.

Thus, while brands like Tesla and Toyota may frequently make headlines and lead sales charts, the actual search behavior of Americans tells a different narrative—one where a practical sedan still holds significant value.
