The next-generation A6 sedan will feature the same front-end design and interior layout as the A6 Avant.

Audi almost rebranded its ICE-powered A6 to A7 but reversed the decision at the last minute.

      Available engines will include a 201hp four-cylinder and a 362hp V6 gasoline engine.

Currently, Audi has more significant issues to address, having abruptly halted all vehicle shipments to the US as it navigates the Trump administration's 25% auto tariffs. However, amidst this situation, the company is also teasing the new generation of its gas-powered A6 sedan, which is set to introduce on April 15.

The teaser doesn't reveal much, but it’s not necessary. With the A6 Avant's recent unveiling in Europe, we have a solid understanding of the sedan's appearance. While the wagon won’t be available in North America, the sedan will be, for now, unless any last-minute tariff changes occur.

Visually, three-quarters of the A6 sedan will resemble the Avant. The primary differences will be at the back, where the sedan features its distinctive design, including a wide LED light strip and actual exhaust outlets—a refreshing change after years of faux elements.

      Familiar Interior, New Promises

The new A6 sedan will have an interior similar to the Avant pictured above.

Inside, the layout will be almost the same across both versions, with the sedan lacking the Avant’s larger and more functional cargo space. The cabin boasts a sleek, tech-oriented design with a large display replacing the traditional instrument cluster and infotainment system, along with a secondary screen for the passenger. Audi aims to restore its reputation for top-quality interiors after facing criticism, but we’ll believe it when we see it.

As a side note: Audi initially intended to rename the gasoline (and diesel in Europe) versions of its competitors to BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class as the A7, to distinguish them from the recently launched A6 E-tron electric model in the US. However, the company decided at the last moment to retain the A6 name.

      Engine Options

Under the hood, the new A6 sedan will retain the same engines introduced in the Avant. This includes a 2.0-liter TFSI four-cylinder gasoline engine generating 201 horsepower (150 kW / 204 PS) and a 3.0-liter TFSI V6 gasoline engine producing 362 horsepower (270 kW / 367 PS). Despite the six-cylinder engine being shared with the S5, this model will not carry the S6 designation. European markets and others outside the US will also get a 2.0-liter TDI four-cylinder diesel engine with the same output of 201 horsepower.

      What Comes Next?

It remains uncertain whether more powerful S6 variants will be added to the lineup, or if the high-performance RS6—rumored to be available with either a V8 or a plug-in hybrid V6—will be exclusive to the Avant body style. Audi has yet to confirm whether the sedan will receive the same offerings.

Sales of the new A6 sedan are anticipated to commence in Europe and other markets in the third quarter of the year, with availability in the US to follow at a later date, depending on tariffs.
