If you were hoping for a genuinely long-range Tesla Cybertruck, we have disappointing news. Multiple sources are reporting that Tesla's long-awaited Range Extender option has entirely vanished from the Cybertruck's online build tool. As of Monday morning, the repeatedly delayed feature is absent.

If you're still a fan of the Cybertruck in 2025, it's probably because you've already come to terms with the fact that Tesla's initial vision for it was unrealistic. Initially, we were promised a 500-mile Cybertruck priced around $70,000. Instead, we received a 325-mile version at $80,000. When the truck finally became available to customers in late 2023, Tesla assured that an optional bed-mounted battery pack would increase the Cybertruck's range to nearly 500 miles.

The extended-range “backpack” battery was expected to enhance the 325-mile dual-motor version to “over 470 miles,” while the tri-motor version would have a maximum range exceeding 440 miles. No specific price or timeline was provided at first, but post-launch, customers were able to reserve the Range Extender for $2,000. However, things took a turn for the worse from that point onward.

Last fall, Tesla made a minor update to its configuration tool. The dual-motor's “470+ mile” estimate was downgraded to “445+,” while the Cyberbeast's estimate dropped to “415+.” This was also the first occasion we learned of an estimated price for the pack: $16,000.

At that time, Tesla indicated the pack would be released sometime in mid-2025. If that timeline still stands, the launch should be soon. However, the option is now unaccounted for. Giving Tesla the benefit of the doubt, it’s conceivable that the company’s marketing team is simply refining the package details ahead of a possible launch.

I won’t be holding my breath.
