Rimac Could Acquire Porsche and Take Control of Bugatti | Carscoops

If the agreement is finalized, Rimac would gain complete ownership of Bugatti and might electrify its future.

The Rimac Group currently holds 55% of the joint venture, with Porsche owning the remaining share.

The Croatian firm may collaborate with additional investors to take control of Bugatti.

Reports suggest that Porsche previously attempted to buy out Rimac from the Bugatti joint venture.

Rimac has significantly advanced in the last ten years and now operates a joint venture with Bugatti, aptly named Bugatti Rimac. The Rimac Group, based in Croatia, owns 55% of this venture, while Porsche holds 45%. However, recent reports indicate that Rimac intends to acquire Porsche’s share in the joint company.

Unnamed sources indicate that Rimac has made an initial offer to purchase Porsche’s share, which previously valued the company at over €1 billion ($1.1 billion). While the specific offer amount remains undisclosed, Rimac may partner with other investors.

Rimac has not made any public statements regarding this, and discussions are said to be in the early phases. Nevertheless, the prospect of Rimac acquiring Porsche’s stake represents a significant shift in the situation.

It has been reported that once Bugatti Rimac was formed in 2021, Porsche sought to buy out Rimac from the joint venture. However, Porsche is currently facing more urgent challenges, partly due to decreasing demand for its electric vehicles, declining sales in China, and issues with the supply chain.

Mate Rimac continues to be the largest shareholder of his eponymous company, which secured €500 million in investments in 2022, including from Goldman Sachs Asset Management's private equity branch and SoftBank Vision Fund 2.

If Rimac succeeds in buying out Porsche's stake in their Bugatti joint venture, it would achieve total control of the French brand. Rimac has played a crucial role in the development of the hybrid Tourbillon hypercar and could potentially pursue its own vision without Porsche’s involvement. This could lead to future Bugatti models that heavily incorporate Rimac's cutting-edge battery technology and electric motors from the Nevera, possibly transitioning entirely to electric power and moving away from combustion engines in upcoming models.
