Enhancements to the Drive Pilot system elevate its Level 3 capabilities.

Drivers can relax and enjoy a movie while the car operates at speeds of up to 59 mph.

The AMG Line Edition introduces exclusive trims, dark features, and 20-inch wheels for the 2026 model year.

Mercedes-Benz is known for not resting on its achievements, particularly with its flagship models. While anticipation builds for a more extensive facelift of the S-Class, the brand has opted for a subtle refresh for the 2025 model year (or 2026MY in North America). Although the updates may appear minor at first glance, they bring significant advancements in technology and personalization.

For years, Mercedes has been refining its Drive Pilot system, which was limited to low-speed operation in congested traffic with a maximum speed of 37 mph (60 km/h) until recently. The system has now seen considerable expansion. According to Mercedes, "on highways in Germany and the US," Drive Pilot now operates at speeds of up to 59 mph (95 km/h) in normal traffic conditions, enhancing its practicality for everyday use.

Drive Pilot Takes a Leap Forward

Before you mention that your Tesla can do the same, it's important to note that Drive Pilot differs because it allows drivers to engage in other activities, such as reading a newspaper or watching a movie when enabled. This isn’t merely revamped cruise control; it’s a genuine Level 3 system employing over 35 sensors, including LiDAR, ultrasonic sensors, radar, and cameras, to gather the necessary data for safe and autonomous operation.

Additionally, Mercedes is testing turquoise-colored turn signals in the US and Germany to indicate when the system is active, although this feature has not yet been implemented in customer vehicles.

      Technological Enhancements and AI Integration

The technological advancements extend further. Over-the-air updates for the MBUX infotainment system now integrate ChatGPT into the vehicle's voice assistant. Microsoft Bing has also been included, along with Google satellite views in the navigation system. Entertainment options are improving as well, with owners now able to purchase the Entertainment Package Plus through the Mercedes-Benz Store, which includes access to YouTube and Sony’s RIDEVU video streaming platform, designed for rear-seat passengers.

      More Customization Options

The 2026 model year also sees expanded customization options. The Manufaktur program is now globally available, offering over 50 new exterior color choices and 25 new interior combinations, including special wood inlays.

Mercedes has launched the S-Class Edition as part of the lineup. This new model features the AMG Line and Night Package and is available in five paint colors, including Night Black Magno and Opalite White Bright. Notable characteristics include dark shadow gloss and black door sills, three options for Nappa leather, 20-inch AMG wheels, and a unique emblem in the infotainment system.

Mercedes-Benz will announce pricing and availability for the 2026 S-Class at a later date.
