Volkswagen plans to address stagnant EV sales by introducing a new hybrid powertrain across its lineup. According to a recent report, this system will be akin to the one used in the Toyota Prius and is being designed to accommodate a variety of vehicles across different segments.

While the brand already offers several hybrid models in Europe, they are primarily plug-in hybrids or mild hybrids. The Golf GTE (shown) is positioned as a gasoline-electric alternative to the GTI, featuring a plug-in system that delivers 268 horsepower. In Europe, the standard Golf, Tiguan, wagon-only Passat, and even the Touareg are available with plug-in hybrid options, with some models also offering a 48-volt mild hybrid system. However, the new technology set to launch next year will be a conventional hybrid configuration.

British magazine Autocar reported that the new tech will include an internal combustion engine, an electric motor, and a battery pack. It will not feature a plug but is expected to support electric-only driving for limited distances by using the engine as a generator. While official specifications are yet to be released, an unnamed source indicated to the publication that the system will be centered around the well-known turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder TSI engine, with power outputs ranging from 201 to 268 horsepower reportedly in development.

If the report holds true, the hybrid system is expected to debut in the upcoming second-generation T-Roc crossover, which is anticipated to be unveiled at the 2025 Munich Auto Show. There’s no need to worry if the name doesn’t sound familiar, as the T-Roc is not available in the U.S. The current model measures about 167 inches in length, making it roughly eight inches shorter than the Taos, VW's smallest crossover for the American market.

What this means for the U.S. market remains uncertain, but it’s reasonable to speculate that the new hybrid system may eventually make its way into American dealerships. Currently, Volkswagen does not offer any hybrids here, yet there is a growing demand for gasoline-electric vehicles. While the company has two EVs (the ID.4 and ID. Buzz), interest in EVs has begun to wane. There is no indication that the second-generation T-Roc will be available in the U.S., but the hybrid system could potentially feature in other crossovers. Notably, the MQB Evo platform also supports the new 2025 Tiguan.

The Munich Auto Show is set to take place in September, so more information regarding Volkswagen's hybrid initiatives should emerge in the coming months.
