Gianni Agnelli owned this Zagato wagon for a duration of two years.
RM Sotheby’s is also auctioning a Fiat 130 Familiare and a Panda that once belonged to Agnelli.
Lancia has created some remarkable vehicles over the years. Among the brand’s standout models from the 1980s and 1990s was the Thema sedan, which led to a station wagon variant designed by Pininfarina. However, this specific Thema is more significant than the regular wagon.
When Lancia considered converting the Thema into a wagon, they approached both Pininfarina and Zagato, asking them to create their own estate version of the Thema. Zagato presented its version first at the 1985 Geneva Motor Show, followed by Pininfarina at that year’s Frankfurt Motor Show. Ultimately, Lancia chose to manufacture the Pininfarina-designed model, with only two Zagato prototypes being produced.
This particular Thema was driven by Italian industrialist and Fiat CEO Gianni Agnelli for two years. It resembles the Pininfarina version but features black D-pillars and a slightly altered tailgate.
RM Sotheby’s will auction the car on April 20 and mentions that while Agnelli sold it after two years, it has always remained in Italy. The odometer reads 92,329 km (57,370 miles) and the vehicle appears to be in outstanding condition. The interior has been well-preserved, with the blue cloth seats showing minimal wear. The auction house estimates it will sell for between €80,000 (~$86,600) and €160,000 (~$173,200).

Two other vehicles formerly owned by Agnelli will also be up for auction on the same day. One of them is a 1986 Fiat Panda which the grandson of Fiat’s founder purchased new and used for skiing trips in St. Moritz. He retained the car until 2001, and it has recently been restored to its original state. The Panda has a mileage of 119,768 km (74,420 miles) and could reach a price of €40,000 (~$43,300).
The third vehicle available for sale is a 1974 Fiat 130 Familiare, which may sell for between €170,000 (~$184,000) and €300,000 (~$324,800). It is one of only three vehicles produced featuring faux wood trim along the sides and a wicker basket mounted on the roof.
