There are regions where off-roading is simply a recreational activity, while in others, it's just a part of daily life. However, it can still be a thrilling experience, particularly if you’re driving the latest creation from Arctic Trucks.
The Toyota Land Cruiser 250/Prado AT37 is the most recent entry in the rugged lineup offered by the Icelandic engineering specialists focused on extreme environments. Skeptical about its capabilities? The product range from Arctic Trucks already includes tough vehicles like the Toyota Hilux and Nissan Patrol, as well as a robust version of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.
Although Arctic Trucks collaborates with several car manufacturers today, it was initially established as a special vehicles division for Toyota. Therefore, the new LC250 AT37 represents a return to its origins.
As indicated by its name, the Arctic Trucks AT37 is equipped with 37-inch BFGoodrich tires, available in all-terrain T/A KO3 or mud-terrain T/A KM3 varieties. These tires are mounted on 17-inch forged alloy wheels with a retro "Heritage" design. Developed by experts known for their Dakar success, the R53 Suspension features a two-way adjustable performance suspension system that provides an additional 40mm in lift and greater travel capability.
Top Gear featured the vehicle in a first-look video, highlighting some impressive features, including widebody fender flares that incorporate tire pressure indicators within integrated recesses, and the company’s signature concealed 2-inch multifunction receiver hitch. A considerable amount of work was necessary to accommodate the larger tires and increased ride height.
To enhance ride quality, the suspension is equipped with larger dampers, springs, and bump stops. The AT37 undergoes a complete rework of the frame and drivetrain. Additionally, the SUV features a wider track and a longer wheelbase – you can catch a glimpse of its undercarriage at the 3:25 mark.
The interior largely retains its factory-standard Toyota design, featuring a different shifter and Arctic Trucks branding. That's about the extent of the changes. As Top Gear presenter Tom Ford notes, "But let’s be honest. No one is buying this vehicle for the interior, right?" He hasn't yet been permitted to drive the new AT37, and the remainder of the video past 4:50 focuses on a tour of the headquarters. After all, why not explore the office when you're in Iceland?
Considering this, this formidable off-roader operates as its own multinational entity. Top Gear indicates that the LC250 AT37 was jointly developed by teams in Iceland and the UK, along with Toyota Africa distributor CFAO. Nevertheless, Arctic Trucks plans to distribute the specialized Toyota SUV globally via its network throughout Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Africa.
The AT37 will be available for purchase starting in the second quarter of this year, either as a dealership-supplied unit or through direct customer conversion. In the U.S., the conversion kit is priced from $19,749. The base Land Cruiser will incur an additional cost, which you can either acquire independently or have Arctic Trucks procure for you. Whether new or used, it’s irrelevant, and there are multiple dealerships for potential buyers to reach out to. As Ford aptly stated, “If you’re going to engage in adventurous off-roading, few companies do it better.”
