Pickup Truck Plunges Directly into Large Sinkhole
A Ram pickup couldn't escape its fate this week when a perfectly timed roadway depression caused its right front tire to sink directly into the hole. But this is winter in Buffalo, New York, so it’s not unexpected.
While reviewing security footage, South Elmwood Detail, an auto detailing shop situated at the intersection of W. Tupper Street and S. Elmwood Avenue, recorded an unfortunate Ram 1500 making a turn only to discover that the apex was lacking both excitement and forward movement. According to WKBW, a city investigation revealed that the sizeable tire-sized crater was actually a sinkhole rather than a pothole formed by freeze-thaw cycles or a hidden stash for moonshine.
“Although the cause is currently unknown, the Buffalo Sewer Authority will be leading the investigation to ascertain the source of the collapsed area at the intersection of Tupper and Elmwood,” stated the City of Buffalo Department of Public Works. “A void beneath the roadway surface has occurred, and the BSA is mobilizing resources and contractors to uncover the root cause of the issue.”
The sinkhole emerged in the busy intersection just moments before the truck drove by. In the surveillance footage, a small crossover vehicle can be seen ahead of the Ram, successfully avoiding the collapsed area. Whether through luck or skilled driving, the CUV narrowly steered clear of the sinkhole.
From the video angle, the large hole is clearly visible, but the view from street level tells a different story. Some observers suggest that the truck driver was following too closely, especially considering the city’s history of ground pockets. Speed could have also played a part, along with potential driver distraction or even seating position affecting visibility. Some might even call it karma. However, without the driver's perspective, it’s all speculation.
What’s certain is that a sinkhole opened just in time for the truck to drop in, and the Ram will require more than just a new tire. Stay alert out there and watch for hazards, particularly during the spring thaw. And remember to look down.
