The Caprice retains its original 5.0-liter V8 engine, delivering 170 hp and 255 lb-ft of torque.

George Barris’ custom shop applied a Gold and Cream paint finish with graphics.

Inside, the vehicle features black and gold velvet seats equipped with a swivel function.

While many Chevrolet Caprices from the 1990s fade into the background of automotive history like a beige sofa at a thrift store, this one stands out as anything but ordinary. Custom-built by the legendary car designer George Barris—the visionary behind the iconic 1966 Batmobile—this Caprice is truly remarkable. It is set to be auctioned in May.

This distinctive Chevy, known as the ‘Nomad’r What,’ takes inspiration from the 1957 Chevrolet Nomad, merging elements of the classic wagon with the 1991 Caprice. It may sound like an unusual combination, but it surprisingly works well. This unique fusion of two different automotive eras comes together nicely.

Much of the front bodywork is typical for a Caprice of this era; however, the rear design deviates from the norm. Inspired by the Nomad wagon, the side windows have been replaced, and rear tail fins have been added to evoke classic 1950s style. In keeping with the original Nomad, this Caprice is equipped with period-appropriate taillights and a chrome bumper that enhances its vintage appeal.

George Barris’ shop painted the exterior in a Gold and Cream scheme, complete with detailed airbrushed graphics. It also features a set of billet wheels.

While the exterior is striking, the interior of this Chevy is just as unconventional. The seats, door panels, pillars, and headliner are all covered in plush black and gold velvet. For added convenience and a hint of 1970s style, both front seats can swivel, making entry and exit easier. Additionally, there is ample storage space in the rear.

Under the hood, the car is equipped with the original 5.0-liter V8 engine, which in its heyday produced about 170 horsepower and 255 lb-ft (346 Nm) of torque, a respectable figure for its time.

This one-of-a-kind Caprice will be auctioned at Mecum Auctions’ Indy 2025 event on May 15. If you're interested, you can find more details in the listing here.
