For some drivers, being the fastest in their specific category isn’t sufficient; they aspire to be the fastest in the world overall. In drag racing, many would argue that's the main objective, and at least one driver believes that IndyCar’s new campaign, “Fastest Racing on Earth,” is bending the truth a bit. Bob Tasca III felt so disrespected by this that he took a moment between his runs at the Amalie Oil Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway this past weekend to confront a Fox Sports reporting team over what he referred to as “fake news.”
“Yeah, I should be discussing that run right now, but honestly, I have to call out Fox—Fox Sports. Throughout the winter, we kept hearing about the ‘fastest motorsports on the planet,’ and it left me a bit confused,” said Tasca III, who owns and drives the Nitro Mustang Dark Horse Funny Car.
“The reality is, it's an insult to our fans and to the drivers for Fox to claim on TV that ‘the fastest motorsports in the world’ is IndyCar. Seriously? I didn’t know Fox had a fake news network.”

Tasca's Mustang has achieved speeds exceeding 340 miles per hour, whereas the fastest qualifying run at the 2024 Indianapolis 500, which is IndyCar's fastest track by a large margin, was just below 235 mph. Formula 1 cars are slightly behind IndyCar in terms of speed, but their technical circuits generally keep their speeds much lower. Given these points, Indy’s legal team probably felt justified in backing the campaign.
While the open-wheel competitors can debate endlessly about whose cars are “truly” faster, the difference of over 100 mph between NHRA Funny Cars and both series leaves no room for debate; these Funny Cars are more akin to rockets oriented horizontally—and often appear just as perilous.
In what may just be a trivial disagreement between a driver and a broadcasting entity, it’s comforting to know there are still individuals with strong passion for motorsports. As long as that remains true, we can always anticipate exciting races.
