Three-time IMSA champion Felipe Nasr was driving Porsche's electric sedan, which boasts 1,019 hp and achieved a lap record of 1:42.1.
The all-electric vehicle is equipped with two electric motors that together generate 1,019 hp.
Porsche's performance-oriented EV can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in under 2 seconds.
The flagship Taycan also recorded impressive lap times at both the Nurburgring and Laguna Seca.
Although the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra recently overshadowed the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT at the Shanghai International Circuit, Porsche remains keen to demonstrate the power of its premier EV. In early February, a purple Taycan Turbo GT was taken to Brazil's Interlagos circuit, where it set a new lap record on the Formula 1 track.
Felipe Nasr, a three-time IMSA champion and triple winner of the 24 Hours of Daytona, was behind the wheel of the Porsche. The Brazilian driver, who has also competed in Formula 1, completed the track in 1:42.1, nearly 8 seconds quicker than a Porsche Taycan Turbo S and just under a second off the 911 Turbo S, which recorded a time of 1:43.087 on the same course.
It’s not surprising that the Taycan Turbo GT established a new record, considering its impressive specifications. The power comes from a duo of electric motors that deliver a total of 1,019 hp, and a recent test by Car and Driver showed it can reach 60 mph (96 km/h) in under 2 seconds.
While speeding down the curved main straight of Interlagos, the Porsche reached a top speed of 272 km/h (169 mph) with Nasr driving. It accelerates out of the circuit’s high-speed corners remarkably, gaining speed in an astonishing manner. However, it is still significantly slower than a Formula 1 car, which can complete the track in under 1:08. Still, the Taycan Turbo GT’s production car time is quite remarkable.
“It’s incredible how fast the car accelerates and delivers its power,” Nasr stated after his lap. “The steering of the Taycan Turbo GT was very precise in slow corners and remained stable even during heavy braking. The balance and grip – it’s a true performance machine.”
The vehicle used for the record lap was equipped with the optional Weissach performance package and Pirelli Trofeo RS tires. Last year, the same car completed WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in just 1:27.87, making it one of the fastest production cars to ever navigate the Californian circuit.
