Mercedes-AMG’s electric SUV takes its design cues from the Vision AMG concept.

Constructed on the AMG-EA platform, it is anticipated to deliver up to 1,000 hp from three axial-flux motors.

Set to make its debut in 2026, it will directly compete with the forthcoming Porsche K1.

Last month, Mercedes-AMG showcased a preview of the all-electric super SUV it’s developing. This new model is being created alongside AMG’s inaugural in-house electric sedan, and, similar to that vehicle, is expected to stir up debate. Many enthusiasts are used to AMG vehicles featuring powerful V8 engines, which contributed to the four-cylinder hybrid C 63’s lack of success. Nevertheless, the German brand is confident that electric power is the way forward and is working on something quite remarkable.

Prototypes captured by our spy photographers, along with official images issued by Mercedes, were heavily obscured by body cladding and camouflage, hiding much of the design specifics. However, it’s possible that the electric vehicle, rumored to be named the GT SUV, will share numerous traits with its sedan sibling, which is inspired by the 2022 Mercedes Vision AMG Concept.

With this consideration, artist Nikita Chuyko created illustrations for Kolesa based on the test vehicles and recent renderings of AMG’s competitor to the Taycan, offering a glimpse of what the new SUV could look like. If the production model resembles these designs, it would definitely stand out in the Mercedes range, though we’re not entirely convinced it will be for all the right reasons.

The front of the SUV shown in this rendering is dominated by a faux grille, which is expected in an electric vehicle, while the headlights connect through a light bar. They also feature the Three-Pointed Star daytime running lights that will appear on numerous new Mercedes models.

As intriguing as the front of this visual is, the back is even more captivating. Drawing inspiration from the Vision AMG Concept’s style, it incorporates a wraparound LED taillight design that resembles the Kia EV6—an interesting choice, though it arguably suits the Mercedes better.

      Power, Performance, and Ambition

Moving past the design details, the GT SUV is expected to match the size of the 2022 Vision AMG concept, measuring about 5.1 meters (200 inches) in length, with a wheelbase exceeding 3 meters (118 inches). This gives it a larger footprint than the fuel-thirsty AMG GLE 63, placing it in competition with the fully electric EQS SUV flagship.

Under the surface, the new AMG electric SUV will utilize the brand’s proprietary AMG.EA platform, featuring an 800-volt electrical system for quicker charging and enhanced efficiency. It will also include newly developed axial-flux electric motors from the British firm Yasa, potentially exceeding 1,000 hp. Such power will make it a formidable competitor against other electric crossovers like the Lotus Eletre R, which delivers 905 hp.

A release date has yet to be confirmed; however, it is likely the production version will be unveiled in 2026, with sales starting later that year or early 2027, depending on the market, just ahead of its Porsche K1 competitor. In theory, it stands as a serious rival for any luxury electric crossover, but its market success will hinge not only on its technology and performance figures but also on its design.
