The 2026 Volvo ES90 Isn't the Electric Sedan We Anticipated.

Last September, Volvo gave us a sneak peek of its upcoming flagship electric sedan with some initial images. We were quite curious as to why the lower portion of the vehicle was so heavily obscured in those pictures. Now, it’s clear to see why. Introducing the 2026 Volvo ES90 “sedan.”

For now, let's put aside the unconventional proportions and concentrate on the specifications. The ES90 will be offered globally in three variants: Single Motor, Twin Motor, and Twin Motor Performance. The Single Motor model features a rear drive unit that generates approximately 330 horsepower (245 kilowatts) and 354 lb-ft of torque. This is paired with a 92-kWh battery pack (with 88 kWh usable) and includes a 300-kW onboard charger. Both Twin Motor models add a front drive unit, but as the name suggests, the Twin Motor Performance provides increased power (~670 hp versus 440 hp) and torque (635 lb-ft versus 494 lb-ft). Both Twin Motor versions also come equipped with the upgraded 106-kWh battery pack (102 kWh usable), capable of charging at 350 kW.

While the Single Motor might ultimately offer the best efficiency among the trio, its smaller battery means it has a shorter range. Although Volvo hasn't released EPA figures yet, they estimate a range of 404 miles on the European WLTP cycle for the Single Motor and 435 miles for both Twin Motor variants. Keep in mind that EPA evaluations often result in lower range estimates compared to WLTP ratings, so these conversions should be taken with caution. Volvo has yet to announce which variants will be available in the U.S. market, but it would be surprising if the Twin Motor and Twin Motor Performance versions weren’t included.

Regarding the exterior design, it resembles a blend of the Toyota Crown and the designs from Volvo's partner Polestar. The elevated stance is intentional; the company’s press release highlights the ES90’s “slightly raised ride height to grant the driver a more commanding view of the road.” Whatever it may be, Volvo appears uninterested in categorizing it as a sedan, SUV, or anything in between.

At least the interior unmistakably reflects Volvo's style—at least from what we can see. The minimalist design consistent across the brand's electrified lineup continues here, with most essential functions apparently located behind the vehicle's main vertical 14.5-inch touchscreen. There is a limited control interface directly below it, along with a few standard controls on the steering wheel and stalks, but there’s nothing here resembling a traditional knob.

As suited for a luxury flagship, Volvo invested significant effort into ensuring interior comfort. The company asserts that the cabin is one of the quietest ever constructed, yet you can make it as loud as desired with an optional Bowers & Wilkins 25-speaker audio system featuring Dolby Atmos. The panoramic sunroof even comes with electrochromic dimming technology instead of just a basic sunshade.

Beyond that, Volvo mainly focused on the ES90’s advanced electrical architecture and internal software enhancements. While we believe these aspects are impressive to industry professionals, we are primarily interested in the driving experience, which we likely won’t know about until next year. Currently, the U.K. and certain parts of Europe can place orders for the new ES90, while the rest of the world (including the U.S.) will have to wait until late 2025 or early 2026. That’s quite a lengthy period to speculate on its appearance—good or bad.
