GM rescinded a warranty for a customer with a SoFlo Hummer EV following initial approval.

The owner has provided documents indicating that GM maintained the warranty for a while before nullifying it.

As further details emerge, significant questions remain unanswered in this evolving case.

GMC Hummer EV owners are not selecting the vehicle for its superior quality as a truck or EV; they are attracted to it for its entertainment value. However, that enjoyment diminishes rapidly when the vehicle malfunctions. This is where the manufacturer's warranty should come into play, and initially, it did, covering Dustan Broom and his SoFlo Customs-modified electric Hummer. But then GM entirely revoked his warranty.

Following our initial report, Carscoops acquired documents from the owner demonstrating that GM had actually honored the warranty for a certain period, despite the modifications made by SoFlo. So, what prompted the change? Numerous questions still linger.

A Difficult Beginning with Ongoing Problems

Broom collected his Hummer EV from SoFlo in April of the previous year. Almost immediately, he encountered issues with the My Modes settings and the power tonneau cover. In attempting to resolve these problems, he brought the vehicle to the dealership for service. During his first visit in July, the staff noted in his records that they ordered new parts to rectify the tonneau cover. However, they claimed they could not replicate the issues with the My Modes. So Broom waited, and waited.

After several months, in December, the replacement component for the My Modes arrived at the dealership. The service team indicated that they would need the truck for a few weeks since the high-voltage battery had to be removed. When Dustan retrieved his truck, “Nothing was fixed,” he reported to Carscoops. In fact, he asserts that the My Modes functionality, which had worked sporadically before this incident, has been completely inoperative since then.

      A Smoldering Issue

However, even if the suspension modes were malfunctioning, Broom was also expecting a resolution for his power tonneau cover. This was not just a personal issue; it was part of a service update labeled “N232434060,” which included the necessary replacement of the power tonneau cover motor. Less than a month after the truck was returned from the shop, things reportedly escalated from bad to potentially dangerous.

Broom stated that on December 5, his cover malfunctioned and produced a loud popping noise. After going inside to look up how to fix the problem, he returned to find the cover smoking while the GMC sat in his garage. “I panicked. I contacted several dealerships, but no one was able to assist. One advised me to drive it into the street to prevent my house from burning down. I managed to unlock the cover, freeing the top piece, which thankfully seemed to extinguish the fire,” he explained.

Less than two months later, Broom went back to the dealership to at last have the tonneau cover repaired under the same service update. It turned out that the required parts hadn’t been ordered back in July as initially promised, but only after the near-fire incident occurred. Ten days after dropping off the Hummer EV for the repair, Broom received a call that would initiate this entire ordeal.

      Warranty Canceled—Without Explanation

Broom claims that the service manager informed him that while his tonneau cover had been fixed, GM had opted to void his entire vehicle warranty due to the modifications made by SoFlo Customs.

“I was informed today that GM did NOT conduct any technical evaluation of the truck, they STILL do not know what the problem is, but assert that because my truck ‘looks’ the way it does, the entire warranty is void, and they refuse to address the service light issues and the My Modes problems, not to mention the devaluation of the truck due to having a 100% voided warranty,” he stated.

Documents shared with Carscoops indicate that GM specifically voided the warranty because it attributes the My Modes issues to SoFlo's modifications. In multiple work order items, the dealer noted, “NO WORK DONE NEEDS TO GO BACK TO THE SHOP WHERE MODIFICATIONS WERE DONE.” We have attempted to reach out to SoFlo multiple times but have received no response. The same goes for General Motors, who seemingly approved warranty work before reversing that decision after initially supporting the warranty on this Hummer EV.

      What’s Behind the Warranty Revocation?

It is possible that GM has a legitimate reason for the denial,
