We’ve just received the keys to a new Nissan Pathfinder Rock Creek Edition.

Priced at over $46,000, this model seeks to combine both on- and off-road performance.

The SUV is equipped with a robust 295-hp V6 engine, all-terrain tires, and an elevated off-road suspension.

The Nissan Pathfinder has a history of transformations. It originally began its journey similar to the Toyota 4Runner—as a rugged, body-on-frame SUV built on a truck chassis. Throughout the years, it has transitioned into a more sophisticated family vehicle, but the Rock Creek edition aims to reclaim some of that original toughness.

In the coming week, we’ll explore how effectively it merges contemporary comfort with classic ruggedness by testing it in various typical environments, from bustling city streets to demanding off-road paths.

Under the hood, every Pathfinder houses a 3.5-liter V6 engine. In most configurations, it generates 284 horsepower (211 kW); however, in the Rock Creek version we’re evaluating, Nissan has adjusted the ECU to increase power to 295 horsepower (219 kW). This power is distributed to all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is also an option in different trim levels.

The starting price for the Rock Creek edition is $46,550 before additional options, while the base Pathfinder begins at $38,460 and can exceed $51,000 with all the features included. This trim comes with all-terrain tires, a slightly raised suspension, and plenty of Rock Creek branding throughout the cabin and exterior.

      Designed for Adventure

Interestingly, the version we’re assessing has a maximum towing capacity of 6,000 pounds, which surpasses my 2010 Ford Flex Limited that has a 355-hp twin-turbocharged V6 engine and a towing capacity of 5,500 pounds. However, Nissan isn’t marketing the Rock Creek as a towing leader. Instead, the emphasis is on its off-road capabilities.

According to Nissan’s promotional material, the Rock Creek provides "capability for more rugged journeys with all-terrain tires, a lifted off-road-tuned suspension, and a tubular roof rack." When this model debuted in 2022, Michael Colleran, senior VP of Nissan’s U.S. marketing and sales, highlighted its adventurous character, stating, “The 2022 Pathfinder was all about a ‘return to rugged,’ and the Pathfinder Rock Creek takes that spirit even further.”

We’re about to discover how well that ruggedness withstands testing. Over the next week, we’ll evaluate the Pathfinder in urban settings and off-road, where pavement is a rarity. Now, we want to hear from you. What would you like to know about Nissan’s most rugged Pathfinder? Share your questions in the comments, and we’ll provide answers in about a week!
